I have a small collection of silver proof and some some gold proof coins that have have been passed on to me. Most of them are silver with gold plating. How are they valued? Most of the coins have a face value of $25 but I know they were purchased for around £60-70 each. I plan to keep the coins because they were given to me and I assume they are worth what ever the current value of silver and gold is, but what's the $25 face value all about?

It's quite common, for example half ounce American 'eagles' have a face value of $50, although the actual gold is worth more like $400 at current market prices.

Of course the market price of the Gold shifts.....but the $ value remains fixed.....it's an interesting illustration of what inflation actually means....a steady FALL in the real worth of paper/electronic currencies.
