Hi All,

My dad is about to start having radiotherapy on a tumor on his spine which his nerves have grown into. He has gradually over the years lost feeling in his legs and feet and over the last 12 months it has gradually got worse. He has been advised if he leaves it there is a chance he could lose total control over his bladder so has decided to go for radiotherapy to try and help it.

I think its just a case of time until he loses use of his lower body which we are all scared to death of but he keeps his chin up very well and tried to carry on as if nothing was wrong.

Is there anything I should know about whilst he is going through this and is there any experts in here on tumors?

Thanks for any advice

Si

My mum had cancer a few years ago, I know how you are feeling. I wish you and your family all the best. Sorry I can't offer any advice, but I hope all goes well.

A chap where I watch my footy has just had Radiotherapy and chemo on his back for skin cancer. Every week I see him he seems to be getting better, he's in a bit of discomfort from the burning effect it leaves afterwards but it looks like it's done the trick. All the best to your father.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I would recommend he uses aloe vera gel (forever living do a good one) as the radiotherapy will leave him feeling sunburnt and sore. A friend of mine is having radiotherapy at the moment and swears by it.

My mum has just been through a course of radio and is now on kemo... Not nice and you have my sympathy. Listen carefully to the advice given and take every advantage that you can to speak to the experts.

Do you have a nominated McMillian Nurse? Or what every they are called these days - worth their weight in gold

Radiotherapy for cancers in the spine is pretty good - not curative but often helps a lot with symptoms.

But yeah, it is basically a burn. So Aftersun/Aloe Vera etc etc. Doesn't seem to have the same systemic side effects as chemo, but the area can be a bit sore.

Make sure you go for the one called 'Aloe Vera Gelly' as it doesn't have anything other than natural aloe vera in it. Link to site: http://www.foreverlivingproductsuk.co.uk/

My Mum recently had a course of radiotherapy, 5 times a week for six weeks.

She was fine, just a bit more tired than usual.

All the best.

He's about to go through a very tough time, and it will be tough on you & the family. A year ago my mother was going through chemo & radiotherapy and there were times when things were looking very bad for her. Now - complete ( we hope ) recovery, and she's about to go on a cruise around the Med!

Never give up, be strong, good luck.

Dont forget there is a BIG difference between radiotherapy and chemotherapy. I think the OP's Dad is in for a course of radiotherapy.
