I'm not talking about theft here. But genuine loss either by you or your company.

An example. i worked for a big PLC offices from London to Glasgow.

Group email 1. Will the person who has the Honda CRV Reg XXXXXXX please let me know who they are.

A few weeks later....Group Email 2. We need to find out where the car is as its lease is about to expire. It belonged to X in wherever and I am told it became a pool car.

A week later. Last chance. Who has the car.

A day or two later. This monring I informed the Metropolitan Police that a Honda CRV Reg XXXXXXX has been stolen, sometime between today and six months ago.

We never did find out what happened to it. We'd had some redundancies so we can only guess some disgruntled employee took it home and either locked it in a garage/barn, took it abroad, rolled it into a river, sold it to a dodgy scrap man/car dealer.

Apparently we paid the lease company what it was worth and declaired it "lost"

Cant beat that... but I once lost a ring that I inherited from an uncle of mine. Was supposedly worth £700. WTF did they give it to a 14 yr old for?

On a similar vein, an engineer colleague of mine from a very, very long time ago quit the job after many months of the employer repeatedly taking huge advantages of his hard work ethic.

When he was passed over for a promotion that he clearly deserved (they gave the job to someone who knew how to brown-nose, but was woefully inadequate for the job) he handed his notice in.

Employer didn't give a toss - they expected him to withdraw his resignation letter as his leaving date came closer.

He decided to leave two days before his final day, and pushed an envelope through the office letterbox over the weekend..... basically he told the firm exactly what he thought of them, and explained that he was actually leaving the country (which apparantly he did)

He said that all of his ompany property was safely in the boot of his company car (a Montego!), and he enclosed the car keys in the envelope.

There was a PS on his letter.... "due to the security on the industrial estate [where the office was based] being so poor over the weekends, I decided to park the car safely in a car park. The ticket is in the glove box. It is somewhere down south... [we were based in Birmingham] I can't exactly remember where...... Bye."

The office tried to contact him, but he had totally disappeared.

From memory it took literally months to track it down to an NCP somewhere in central London. The parking bill was fooking huge!

I had a friend who lost his company car though drink.

He was in the habit of going out on a Friday night and getting lashed. He lived in Dublin and would drive to whatever pub he fancied and leave the car nearby to be picked-up the next afternoon.

He woke up one monring....and went back to where he thought the car was and it wans't there. He got his wife to drive round the streets of Dubin looking for the car. It was a very nice Beemer I recall.

He pondered what to do over night. He rang his mobile - which he'd left in the car with a lot of his other personal gear.

Gets the bus into work on Monday prepared to tell the company the car had been nicked. There was his car, parked up where he'd left it on Friday.

Apparenlty there had been some do on at work on Friday and he'd got pissed there, and come straight home in a cab. He'd didn't temember any of it and has assumed he'd gone out to his usual haunts on the lash.

But yeah, losing an oil rig is pretty impressive....if careless.

Not quite in the same league but I lost my Maurice Lacroix watch that my Mam and Dad bought me for my 21st on a night out. It cost £1200. Parents weren't happy at all.

my old next door neighbour lost his "pub Merc" in newport for about 2 weeks. as he didnt care about it, he used to drive it to a pub, leave it there and walk home/get a taxi... so him and a few mates drove into newport, parked up in newport, got hammered, Taxi home... woke up next morning, wheres my car?, left it in newport.....but where..... 2 weeks later he got a phone call of the police
"excuse me sir but has your car been stolen, we have found it in newport at XXXXX location"
"Ah so thats where i left it"

Not from a business, but personally. Early days of new baby, much feeding in the middle of the night, certain amount of, ahem 'leakage', so a bit of a build up of tissues on the bedside table.

Hubby gets a bit pissed off with the mess, big sweep into the bin on a Sunday night. Bin day Monday morning. Only then do I notice the absence of one of my treasured diamond earrings. £800 in the landfill. He's loved but not forgiven. wink

Nintendo Gameboy. Packed away in a box with a load of redundant paperwork that I was keeping 'just in case'. Day came when i got brave and chucked box in dustbin. Got a renewed urge to play SuperMario six months later, and remembered....

When I was a kid I dropped a camera down a ravine taking a picture of a waterfall. It was a st camera but it was a big loss at that age.

Securities? I appear to have mislaid a box containing approx. $40bln of them over the weekend. If you spot them in the office over the coming days, please either hand them to Security if there's somebody on the front desk, or to Barclays Capital who've promised to take good care of all the ones I scrawled AAA onto.

Many thanks,

Yes, but it was automatic, so it'll only be right twice a day...
