OK, Douglas Adams may be dead, but hey...

I suspect at some point in the future I will write a sixth Hitchhiker book…I would love to finish Hitchhiker on a slightly more upbeat note.
Five seems to be a wrong kind of number, six is a better kind of number.
Now it seems Adams' wish has come true. Children's author Eoin Colfer has been chosen to write the sixth of the series by Adams' widow Jane Belson. He writes of his joy at being able to continue the series with the new book And Another Thing.

Hmm I have no real problem with another book being written, but you just know it won't be quite the same as a real Douglas Adams book. I quite like Eoin, depends if he tries to imitate the style or does it his own way I guess.

It will be interesting to see how he resurects Zaphod, Arthur and Ford etc as they were all evapourated at the end of book 5.

I hope, being a childrens author, he can still get appropriate levels of sarcasm and cynicism in, or it won't be a Hitchhiker novel at all. For my money, Terry Jones' Starship Titanic shows how to write a Douglas Adams book, or I'd like to see what Neil Gaiman, a confessed Adams fan, could have come up with.

I'm guessing he'll go for the it was all a dream/parallel universe theory that the Radio show did a few years ago.
I just find it very annoying. People these days just won't let anything go. We don't need bloody sequels, prequels or re imaginings of all of our favourite cultural icons thank you very much. Douglas has gone and that should be the end of it.

Have to agree with your last sentiments. It was the fact that it was a parallel universe that required the Vogons to destroy two Earths so the box on Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz's(sp?) to do list, could be ticked off.

I loved the Hitchhiker's Guide, one of my favourite books, not that I read much but anyway. I read it after watching the tv series several times. We own all 5 books as a family but I worry that a sixth book may just kill everything that was built up in previous books.

Like the "Young James Bond" series about his time at Eton, even though he was expelled and sent to Fettes in Edinburgh when he was fairly young!

I must admit even though I'm a massive HHGTTG fan, I had to listen to several times before I got the gist.

I actually thought the radio show finale should have been the end of it especially after the rather hopless but well intentioned movie. The latest adoption was very good especially the matresses, Ruuppertt, Zarazag (Douglas himself of course) and the simply awesome Wowbagger the Infinetly Prolonged ("I've done you before, haven't I?"). The only bad point IMHO was Jane Horrocks as Fenchurch, she was just too twee and Fenchurch is a nice girl but not twee. Should have been Helen Blaxanwhatshername....you know Cold Feet, killed in the Saab, Friends, her.

Damn! I'm too late to write Star Wars, Bond, Hitchhikers, Shakespeare...
Do you think there is a market for a Tom Brown sequel? Oh, someone already did. Erm, Conan Doyle?

Why can't they leave well alone? So what if the ending isn't that cheerful. They risk the same ridicule that Bobby Ewing got for reappearing in the shower!

Yep, but the publishers wanted a novel too, and DA didn't have time to write it, so he passed it over to Terry Jones of Monty Python fame to write instead. Quite a good book.
