...extract a wisdom tooth under sedation (rather than general or local apparently) if done privately?

My wife needs a tooth out, and had an NHS consultation 18 months ago - since then she was pregnant so couldn't have it done - they are now offering another consultation in November with treatment "at some time in the future". It is really pissing her off now, so what is it going to cost me to get it sorted privately?

And yes, I have already offered my services with a pair of mole grips. hehe

TIA

Surely all the dentists will be hard at work at this time of day?

IV sedation or inhalational sedation?
Need to see x-rays to give a better estimate, but around 300 for a straightforward lower 3rd. Depends where in the country you are, bigger cities are going to be dearer.

Do you have Private Medical? Some medical insurance policies cover things like wisdom tooth extraction.

Thanks Gordon, that's really useful. We are in the South West, so probably Bristol, Bath, Swindon.

About £250 depending on how straight forward it is and assuming you are an existing patient.

Can't she be seen as an emergency?

In Sheffield there is a Dental Hospital where emergency cases can be seen and I'm sure they can remove it pretty quickly. I had both of mine done under local, not as bad as route canal work! Ouch.

Her Dentist, who has referred her to NHS. The tooth is fked (i.e. falling to pieces).

you don't have to be in an emergency situation to use the dental hospital. i don't have a dentist but use the manchester dental school for anything i need doing.

had 3 fillings done there to date, plus a root canal and have got a ceramic false molar where i smashed a tooth. must be around £2k of dental work for free right there! all top notch too smile

Well if it's falling to pieces then it's fair enough to extract then. You wouldn't bother crowning a wisdom tooth.

my desntist offered to do it privatley at the practice for about £200. its about £1500 in a private hospital

my dentist was reluctant because my nerve was close to the root of the tooth and so he recommended i go and have it done by peopel who do it day in day out so i waited for abotu 1 year on the NHS.

Having just this evening phoned a south Yorkshire drop in center to be told there are very strict rules as to what is an emergency and me being in agony in not one of them and even if it was they would not do that type of treatment anyway.

Id wager the answer would be no

The PCTs tightened up the rules on what is considered an emergency when they took over from us. When dental practices were doing the emergency service, even a crown falling out was an emergency. The PCT would bk you if the patient complained about not being seen. Now that they are in charge, you have to be dying before they'll see you.

Also, RCT is available on the NHS....I've done 2 today and one was a molar.
