Taking the GF out for dinner after work tonight. She's at Barbican, and I was planning on making a trip on the Eye after dinner.

On account of living in the provinces, I don't know the town very well, so I'm not sure where to take her for dinner. I'll be wandering round those parts of town today in the hope of spotting somewhere, but if PH has any good advice, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Needs to be good food within the budget of a graduate yet to start a proper job....but it is a special occasion so the boat can be pushed somewhat. Either Barbican or Westminster (both unlikely, no?), or somewhere in between.

There's a Pizza Express very close to the Barbican, just over London Wall, a nice little Italian restaurant in Whitecross Street and, if it's still there, a great Thai place also on Whitecross Street called Warin. Not really that many other great restaurants around as it's mainly a business area rather than a tourist one.

Don't know Westminster area that well.

Gets my vote. If you can afford to splash out a little though i can Highly recommend Artisan, we went the other weekend and it was one of the best meals out i have ever had. You will be looking at iro £100 if you have wine and a bottle of water.

If you are going on the eye i would also say get a Champaign flight. £30 is well worth it as you get the guide book, a glass of champers and best of all fast tracked to avoid the queuing masses.

'Pushing the boat out' in the country can mean a run of the mill place in central London.
If I was recommending one, it would be Sketch - just of Regent St. Easy enough getting around by black cab.

Not really in line with budget requirments though is it?

As above, Smiths does good food no matter which budget you fall in to (it does get better as you go up the floors though...)

I'm not sure the Eye after dark is that good an idea. All you can see are a load of lights that could be any city anywhere.

During the day you can spot the various London land marks.

Seconded. 5 mins walk from Barbican. Good atmosphere, good food, brasserie restaurant fairly reasonable.
