Hi All,

Wife's birthday is coming up next month and has asked for earing, her sister is minted and has lots of diamonds. The wife would never say but she would love a pair of nice diamond earrings.

Anyone know where to get a pair without being ripped off?

Cheers

First of all I would have to say that I'm not an expert on the diamond trade, and that this is borne out of a purely personal experience but have you tried a jewellers?

I found the diamond prices at the Cullinan Mine very competitive a few years back, but that probably doesn't help.

Hatton Garden?

Get a cheap flight / train over the Antwerp and get one wholesale. You'll save money and have a nice trip thrown in. You could even take the wife over with you, make her think the mini break is her birthday present and then get her the diamonds.

You will need to do a bit more research to find a supplier, but there are more than plenty of them over there. No doubt there will be some 'hook-ups' on here. Just make sure you know what you're looking for.

In my experience, consider whole cost including setting.

I bought a pair of studs (third of a carat each) a couple of years ago from an "off street" Hatton Garden outlet (with good website). I saved on the stones, but the setting was quite expensive.

SWMBO rarely wears them now - prefers drops (costume jewellery worth about 2p).

Ah well.

+1 For Hatton Garden.

Always particularly liked Eric Ross, about half way along Hatton Garden - tell them what you want and how much you want to spend and they'll show you a selection of diamonds, let you choose the mounts and make it for you.

I've always managed to negotiate at least 30% off the prices in the window.

Don't know how you feel about buying second hand but Wellers Auction rooms in Chertsey always have some nice stuff, next one is 10th October, catalogue not out until the 4th.

Can't help you out in the UK but I got the finacé's engagment ring out here in Dubai early this year.

I did a lot of research on dealers and stones and ended up going to a dealer that had been recommended by a number of people. Bargained hard and got a good deal.

On my trip home to UK recently, I paid a visit to a jeweler that my family has used for a while, is trusted and unlikely to blow smoke up my arse. We gave him the ring for cleaning and to get a full assessment done for insurance.

He said that the stone (1.26c) was of superb quality, almost flawless (VVS1 - dealer in Dubai had it as a VS1), good colour (F - which I knew) and the retail value in the UK would be almost double what I paid in Dubai. He also said that if a stone of the same quality had come through his place, it would be unlikely that he'd put it up for retail sale and keep it for a family member's gift.

Is she an expert?
If not, just buy a fake diamond and she probbably won't notice.

Diamonds are the biggest scam known to man.

Pah. IMO better to go VS1/2 and spend on better colour and cut. Who looks at diamonds under a magnifying glass?
