Can i apply for 2 courses at the same uni so that if i do not get accepted on one course i have the 2nd as a back-up?

Yes.

Through Ucas i believe you can apply for 6 course,(it was like it when i did it) the top two being your preferred ones. They can all be at the same Uni if you so choose.

You can but some don't like it as it shows you're not committed to the specific course.
