Whats the pay like?

We've got a team outside our building now, either that or the SAS are doing some training. smile

It must be a pretty decent rate, I mean its obviously a fair bit removed from the normal ladder and chammy gang, so pay must reflect risk? I bet the insurance is a bit steep though!

I'd say the risk is minimal because they will be very well trained with properly selected and tested kit. Industrial abseiling is very tightly regulated. As a result, their pay will reflect the levels of training.

Minimal!

Yeah, as minimal as the risk of hanging of the side of a big building on a piece of string can get.

I used to know a guy who was a Civil Engneer/Structural Engineer/Inspector but who also was a trained climber. He used this combination to command a huge salary by inspecting sky scrapers and other tall buildings by abbing down the outside of them.

2 pieces of string. Both rated well above the requirements for the job. I never found Abseiling scary at all. I can see what holding me up and I know what it's attached to. It's about as scary as walking over a drain cover.

I work in a sky scraper (near the top) and there are all these hoops embedded in the walls. It looks like the dude just has to clip into a few of these hoops to get scrubbing. however, the windows rotate through 180 so anyone can wash the windows from the inside.

many who do this (if not all) will be IRATA level 1 qualified minimum.

A lot of climbers do this to supplement incomes and also will work in construction/offshore and when combined with another trade can command reasonable salaries I believe although I have no idea as to amount.

Am I the only one to find the dichotomy funny? Old-school window cleaners now aren't allowed to use ladders (H&S, very long handled brushes, etc), yet we have people abseiling down skyscrapers to do the same job?

And inwards-opening windows? Great idea! I have them. To clean them, have to you open them up and stand on a chair (to reach the top). At which point you are standing on a chair beside a 5' x 5' hole, facing a four storey drop onto concrete!
yikes
