a sizeable proportion of the western world, say 25% were to stop being able to afford to live. By this I mean cutting back as much as possible and still being unable to meet the basic outgoings of energy, water, food and mortgage. Having just read the other thread about EU energy price increases due to Carbon trading surely this could potentially become a reality?

A real shame there isn't a giant 'reset' button out there that would magically get everything back to a sensible level!

Your taxes would simply go up until you could support their basic needs.

Which would surely drag those surviving into the category that needed supporting making the 25% figure I mentioned go ever higher.
