Just how many more of these lenders can the tax payer continue to prop up.

I think a more important question is at what point does it become better to let them fail than nationalise them?

The bail outs stuff is getting ridiculous and I shudder to think about how they're funding it all. It's a really really bad idea I feel as well as the US's proposed $700bn bill. It's only going to make things a lot worse in the long run instead of leaving things to the market to sort itself out.

Could we have a whip round and see if we could buy the next bank that comes along cheap?

I mean, they may have paper debts and everything, but I bet when they give us the keys to all the branches we could just go round and take the cash out of the vaults and just run away! These simple plans are the best, chaps.

I'm thinking of retiring in a nice colonial bungalow in Singapore.

Biggest shame is that no in the UK there will be 3 big banks, Lloyds HSBC & Santander.

Its bad for the consumer less competition so higher prices.

And I understand some have amalgamated registrations so the £35k limit applies across tthe group or at least across more than one bank.

The Irish have raised the limit to £80K now.

Am I right in thinking the £35K limit is only private customers and businesses get nowt? Interesting to see how the tax man collects his corporation tax I have saved up for 9 months time if the bank goes bump.

All these mergers seem to be happening very quickly does the B & B part buy out from Santander and the HBOS takeover not have to be approved by shareholders?

In a word no. Ive had the formal documents last week & it confirmed that the divi will be honoured but as an all share issue.

The deal has been done I would have imagined that the majority shareholders were in that key meeting with lloyds and they can push the deal through.

Meanwhile on the Continent 'Fortis' has had to be rescued by the Belgian Government. For those who've never heard of them, they're Belgiums largest bank, and the biggest bank in Europe so far to go pop. It's not just a US/UK problem this.

Forgive my ignorance of things financial, but are these banks basically lending out so much money they go bankrupt, so the government then pays their debts to keep them solvent?

Is it like me spoofing all my money on cars and bikes, and loans to bums, and then asking the government to pay my cards of for me to save me having to go under? And them saying "okay sonny, here ya go!£££££"

Correct. Just like NR.
Essentially the business is bankrupt/can no longer trade/raise funds so its a dead duck.

Let them fail for a short term pain, or wrap the knackered investments up in a big bag and let the tax payer pay for them for many, many years to come. All in the name of a 4th term.

Shame on the government.

Tonker - sadly I fully agree with you. I wish you were wrong.

One thing though the USA have this $700Billion & Freddie & Fannie [to date Im not sure if I have seen the exposure to the US tax payer?]

Where will all of this end up? Personally I think we have a tough decade to go through now & I hope the number of jobless doesnt increase too much.

Just thinking about this is the UK Govt had let NR & B&B fail - what would the difference be? Clearly no risk at all to the UK tax payer and clearly during liquidation someone would buy up the mortgage business/loans/savings business and we'd then carry on. Only the NR/B&B share holders would lose out.

What benefit is there in the Govt stepping in?

From memory they intend to run NR until there is a buyer for it - well R Branson put his hand up fair enough he wanted a good deal but frankly only the S/h would lose out.
