As per the title - Given the trend towards nationalising banks - where do we stand if the major banks are nationalised?

And are Building Societies likely to be affected and/or should we be dump all our money there?

(Edit - That should read "What happens if banks are nationalised & Building Society Q.]

What building societies?

There aren't any left.

Gone, all gone.

Well not quite, but there are very very few that are actually still building societies.

Available credit would/is impacting Building societies too.

B&B used to be a great institution as a Building society as its savings books were greater than / equal to its mortgage book hence no issue, however since it was listed it vastly increased its Mortgage book (savings stayed similar) and it balanced its books on the money market - problem is the money market has dried up totally, result business fails.

Nationwide being the obvious one, and I suspect their board are having a right old chuckle at the demutualised societies that jumped on the banking bandwagon.

Nationwide and Skipton are the only two left that I've heard of.

I can think of loads - but they're all small.

I'm with Nationwide (I've got 6-7 accounts with them) and I'm glad that I vote each time to keep them as a society despite the promised huge payouts....
