Ethni-Cities where you live?
Discussion
I want to place a disclaimer before going ahead with this. I mean not to ruffle any feathers and I realize that words typed can be misconstrued easily without the use of proper emoticons and all :rollyes:, so know this; this post is a serious inquiry into the different ethnicites where our members of PH live.
I live in America, New York to be exact, about 30 minutes from Manhattan. I live in the suburbs, I personally very much dislike the city. I attribute it to overpopulation, pollution everywhere and the fact that I work in Queens and what should take me 40minutes AT MOST to get to work takes me over an hour because of incompetent drivers, but thats a whole other issue.
I have been curious for quite some time now what the ethnic population looks like in other countried compared to the States? What I mean is, lately (well not lately so much as lately and cursiously) I have been taking notice of the ethnic landscape in my county as well as my whole city.
I am a White Italian American. Most of where I was is made up of White Italian and Irish American. Growing up there was hardly any spanish and maybe only 10 african americans in my school.
Anywhere I go no, everywhere I go now, White American Italian/Irish is the minority BY FAR. When I step out of my office to get something to eat for lunch I am literally, no joke, the only white american person I can see, and there is hundreds upon hundreds of people in Queens. I recently went back to my high school with my friend to check it out, Spanish and African Americans were everywhere.
I go shopping, same thing. I go an hour north, same thing.
Before anyone takes this the wrong way, remember I am not meaning anything racial by this, I am just genuinely curious is all.
Where did White Americans go? Seriously? My whole neighborhood used to be Italians, now it is only myself and my neighbor, and he is in his late 80's.
So I ask you, what does the ethnic landscape in your home look like?
In other words, does say, England have the same amount of diversity as we do? I cant imagine it would.

You what? You mean "Where I grew up most people were born in America and white in color." Otherwise it just introduces problems that arn't there.
Anyway around here we've got probably a 50% white, 50% others. Which in my street includes:
French
German
Russian
Indian
Jamaican
British
So yeah. A bit of a mix.
Sheffield England seems to be a magnet for asylum seekers and refugees add to that students (a large amount from abroad) and the native Englander feels very much in the minority. Went for a walk around last week and had great difficulty hearing English spoken in the street.
Far more English in the suburbs.
Far more English in the suburbs.
Unfortunately the UK is going just like the USA.
That is not meant in a racist tone, but the fact that no matter how much the lefties try to force different ethnic groups to intergrate they never will in the proper sense. As someone from new York you shold be able to see this by the fact that there are so many "little" countries there. Such as little Italy, little india, china town. The reason is that each ethnic sticks to their own kind. Multi culturalism (i hate that term) means self imposed segregation in real life, and only ever leads to tensions between the groups. I fear the UK will soon have widespread ethnic gang violence just as the USA has. 2005 saw blacks and Asians (india) fighting in the streets of Birmingham. it will only get worse.

I occasionally drive passed my old high school in North West London. When i went there, the school was made up of about 90% 'English' kids.
The last time i drove passed i spotted a couple of white faces among the crowds of brown faces. I would say it was safe to say the school is now perhaps 10% white.

Basically in York you have white people and takeaway owners are a different ethnicity.
But generally not a very diverse society here.

Walk through the centre of town on a saturday afternoon and everyone is white apart from a few chinese tourists. Surely the whitest city in the country. Munter said:

Personally I think it is ridiculous that certain groups have created their own city in the exact image as the one from their homeland, but want to feel equal with american culture. I dont know, im confused on the subject actually.
I also agree that tensions between groups is inevitable. I dont think it is racist to point out that the neighborhoods that were once clean now look like a land fill when certain people move in the neighborhood. I dont care what anyone says, its true.

ked and it's all the fault of the immigrants. This is not a statement that I agree with.Lotus acdc, stating that your area used to great when it was just Italian and Irish is one of the most ironic things I have ever read.
but what I find strange is that people in the US will term themselves as Italian-American or Irish-American - why not just American?
I work with some people that were born here, raised here, have never left here, etc.. But you ask them what nationality they are they will say Irish or Italian...

I never said everythings screwed because of immigrants. I am just pointing out an observation of people and their numbers. Dont bother me none, I get along with everyone. Cool with me, im cool with you. I have all different backgrounds of friends, all different. I was just curious as to how other cities look.
This is for where I live..
"The racial makeup of the city was 42.49% White, 38.98% African American, 0.27% Native American, 5.21% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 8.50% from other races, and 4.50% from two or more races. 21.76% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race."
I don't live in the wealthiest part of town (My town is one of the wealthier suburbs of NYC, think St George's Hill in parts), but my neighborhood is mixed.. seems like about 50-50 Black and White. Big Jewish population as well. It's funny, you tell people that half your neighbors are Black and they think you live in the slums.. it's actually a relatively posh area.

Yeah I noticed that too. As I said I work in Queens, and 99% of my patients are anything but Italian or irish, they always ask me what I am, so I tell them, italian. (I am actually italian and dutch to be exact...) They always reply, 'oh, so your Italian American' It is just a way to say that your grandparents are from the old country, but yeah, im American really, being that I was born here.I work with some people that were born here, raised here, have never left here, etc.. however, you can tell based on how people look for the most part who is italian, who is irish etc. So in actuality, its sort of goes both ways.
