What exactly is forcing brown to have an election then?

How easily could there be a terrorist/global warming/banking/deceased hamster threat that means he calls it off

That's when the current parliamentary term ends.

ETA: I believe there are laws on the books that allow suspension of the normal parliamentary process, but if he were to invoke them he'd end up with either riots in the street or the guaranteed total destruction of the parliamentary Labour party when an election did eventually take place.

Even during WW2, there was a National Government, drawn from all parties by consensus. VE day signalled the end of that, despite the Japanese war still continuing, and there was a general election.

Constitutionally, Brown has no choice but to go to the Queen by June 2010 to ask her to dissolve Parliament.

Nothing surprises me about this government. I can see them being here for a long while yet. I doubt that 2010 will see the end of it.

Of course, I'll happily eat my words.
