We were due to fly to Reykjavik from Stansted last month, but because our Ryanair flight to Stansted from Prestwick was delayed for 10 hours we missed it and subsequently cancelled the whole holiday. After a few letters and faxes I've finally managed to coax our money back for the Ryanair flights (didn't fly as we knew we'd miss the connection with the 10 hr delay and had no other way of getting down in time). But now I'm seeking some compensation for the money lost. Of course Ryanair have rebuffed my first approach for compensation, but I'm sure, since the problem was a mechanical one, they are required by EU regulations to compensate.

Anyone know if I have a case?

Cheers
Chris

You just booked flights with ryanair which they've now compensated you for?

TBH I think that's your lot.

It looks like to me you claim for the flights from ryanair and the holiday/hotels etc from your credit card.

If you bought just a scheduled flight from Ryanair, and it was cancelled/delayed/etc, they aren't accountable for anything subsequent - consequential losses I think the term is....

The same would apply if you were flying to attend your wedding, go to a show in London, etc. Their only responsibility to against the flight provision that you have booked. Similarly, if you were to go on hols from Heathrow and get there by train, and the train was late, the train operator wouldn't be liable for your missed flight.

If you had bought the whole package from Ryanair as a single offer (one set of tickets, one holiday as one transaction), you may have a greater recourse.

Sadly this is where good travel insurance is needed.

Fair enough, I'm sure I read somewhere that new EU regs stated they had to pay compensation for flights delayed over a certain amount of hours, moreso when it's a short-haul flight. They tend to lump cancellations and delays together though when talking about this sort of thing so hard to understand what you're entitled to.

Not even got the money back for the flights yet (just an email saying it's processing, 6 days ago).

The EU directive only covers varying compensation for flights due to delays/cancellations. It has nothing to do with hotels/other parts of your trip that aren't on a plane.

Yeah I'm aware its a fixed amount for compensation, but am I entitled to it given a 10hr delay due to mechanical problems?

If you have you're money back from Ryanair for your delayed flight that is all you can expect. You cannot charge them for the flight you missed, only for the service that they were contracted, and failed to give you. The rest is unfortunate.

guess the thread is an epic fail and an excellent reason why it is worth using credit cards, even if you have to pay 2% surcharge smile

sometimes package holidays can be good smile
