Ok, this is not the normal post, but I am worried like any other mother would be!
My son is 9 and had Leukemia when he was 4 and had 3 and a half years of chemo. He was very ill at the begining and he almost died. He was put on so much fluid he ended up with 3 drip stands (2 on each). The fluid built up on his ball sack and he ended up with a sack bigger than an adult man! Treatment is all finished now (been nearly 2 years since the chemo stopped) and now he has come to me and said his right ball is bigger (and hell it is by over twice the size!!) is this normal?? My hubby 1st said yes this is fine but now we are a bit concerned. Should we get it checked out (we have to go back to oncology day beds) or is this normal? Our son said it is not painful but it is huge? Ok men you know more than me so help please!!! Thank you

Of course you should get it checked - you're worried about it, it's your son, so you won't feel happy until you do. Ignoring all that, it could actually be serious.

If we said yes its normal, would it truly put your mind at rest? I suspect not.

If we said yes its ok, but there was a problem, how would we all live with that?

It’s one of those times where only getting things checked out by the doctors will do.

I wouldn't worry overly. This is a problem I suffer from, with one ball a "normal" size, and one the size of a lemon. There is a certain amount of fluid around the testes to protect them from knocks. This fluid is meant to be self draining and replaced. Mine isn't draining as it should, so one ball is much bigger than the other. However, there are two options for treatment. One involves a doctor sticking a big needle into your bk and draining the fluid off. I have had this done once, and it's bloody weird when he pulls out this syringe with a 4" needle on it! yikes The second is surgery to remove part of the separating bit of tissue, but it's not 100% guaranteed to work and can make any further work difficult. I have chosen to suffer with being permanently dressed to the left for now, as that needle looks damn big, and the surgery is under general anaesthetic, which I don't fancy much either.

edited to say, just in case this isn't the problem, straight off to the docs, where they will ultrasound him to check further. This in itself is bloody weird, as you get thoroughly covered in a cold jelly stuff and have a doc wave a probe over your balls.

Trust me, I've tried that. It doesn't work. It just makes the normal ball smaller! wink

I had leukaemia 20 years ago, I was 13/14 at the time, the doctors always examined my testicles at follow-up appointments for at least 10-15 years. I really think this is something you should get checked out asap, especially if there has been a change in the size recently. Hope all is ok and the docs can put your mind at rest.

One bigger than the other is normal in most I think, but if qenuinely twice the size could be indicative of a problem.

Thank you everyone, you have been really helpful. I will get it checked out tomorrow. I will update you and let you know what they say. I didn't think it was normal just didn't want to look like an over anxious mother! You are all stars thank you X

One is always bigger, but given the margin and the history here, I'd definitely get it checked.

It always amazes me that people post on here, asking for a testicle to be twice the size, especially for someone with an illness history, it should be checked out immediately, I have no idea whether it's a problem or not, but I would be asking a doctor and not pistonheads if it were my son.

Thank you everyone for all your help. We have been to the doctors and he is getting in touch with the Peadiatric Urologist and will probably be a trip to the Children's Hospital. He doesn't think the cancer is coming back but does need it checked out to be totally sure. It could be viral, bacterial bug, a twisted ball, or Mumps. Most possibly mumps! He had the MMR in April (repated as the chemo knocked it out) but he could be the million to one child where it didn't work! Anyone know what a mother can do to make it better?
Thank you so very much everyone the care you all have shown has been outstanding and I really do appreciate all your help. You are a good lot. smile

Unfortunately I'd say this is one of those situations where mummy kissing it better may actually make the situation worse.
