My dentist warned me off using the DIY whitening kits, but never really explained why.

Just gave a shake of his head and said Nooooooooooo....

Whitewash. One gallon should do it.

I agree! Don't use it! Best to go to the dentist. This could leave you teeth sensitive. Plus none of these work really.

It's because they are simply a bleaching agent which, if over- or badly used simply strips away and thins the teeth causing irreparable damage.

If you really have to have it done, see a qualified dentist only.

Urea peroxide yes

There are more interesting things you can do with that than whiten teeth.

Depends what the gel is. The only home kit I know of to work is colgate whitestripes IIRC. available over the counter in america. Personally would not risk it from ebay. Apparently there are some dodgey people on there.

Pigeon,

In all seriousness - there's been multiple threads on this very same discussion.

And in every case - all the PH experts, who reside in the Dental corner, all advised against said kits.

As mentioned above - it's something to do with stripping away the enamel, and some other nasty stuff.

The tooth whitening kit I got from the dentist uses hydrogen peroxide in mild solution.

If your gel smells of pee I'd guess it's fairly strong, could dissolve the enamel on your teeth and cause all sorts of problems in the future.

I was told really white teeth are usually weaker than slightly coloured teeth. So I'm sticking with my cream coloured teeth with the odd red wine stain. biggrin

No argument with that, I'm not disputing any of the advice not to use them. The "sanctimonious git" comment was in response to the post immediately above mine - trampagne making snide comments about smoking.

I have a wall painted Espresso.

I also have an opposing wall painted mistakenly in PINK yikes (golden sand my arse...)

Gives me the option to ask wether they prefer pink or brown in the bedroom biggrin

The light causes the gel to do some witchcraft and make your teeth white. So i assume you put the gel in your mouth then put the light on, you need to read the instructions or it could go badly wrong.

As a side note i think you are a fool for getting something like this from ebay and i would put it straight in the bin and not tempt it. You could regret for a long time trying to save a few quid.
