We have a Suprima 80 boiler, regularly serviced (last time about 2 months ago).

Heating has failed to kick in just now. Our instructions seem to be for a different version of the boiler rolleyes There's only one light on it, seems to be a combination of red and green LEDs behind a lens. It's switched on, can't see a pilot light so may have been blown out by the wind today (although it's never happened before).

Reset button has done nothing, nor has killing the power at the fusebox and switching it back on again. Gas is being supplied.

I'm assuming that it should automatically try to light when switched on? Can I relight the pilot light manually by taking off the front cover?

The only thing I did was alter the (ancient rotary) timer and slid the "on" thing back past the current time so that it comes on earlier tomorrow. But switching it on permanently doesn't start it either...

Any suggestions?

Hmmm,

Just found a second manual, seems we had a new PCB 3 years ago which is why the LEDs are different. It seems we have an "orange" light (red&green together behind a lens!) which means "Mains ON, no external call for heat".

But the boiler/hot water is set to "on" on the separate timer, so I wonder if that is knackered. Still concerned that I can't see a pilot light behind the glass, but couldn't say for certain whether that is abnormal or not... scratchchin

Unless somebody can come up with something stupid that I'm doing/not doing reckon it might be time to call out somebody...

No pilot on the suprima, electronic ignition.

'No Call For Heat' means there is no switched live comig into the boiler.
Timer is giving live (we assume) next stop Room Stat. Is it turned up? Is it fked?
You have motorised valves?? Are they opening?? Check to see if the manual lever on the heating valve is loose (meaning it's open) or under tension (meaning it's closed)

Thanks Ferg.

Timer is set to "on" for both heating & hot water so stat shouldn't make any difference. It is turned up past the "click" anyway.

Does it sound like the timer is knackered? It's some prehistoric Randall thing, my parents had one like that ripped out when their boiler was replaced 10 years ago!

Is the cylinder up to temperature? Check those motorised valves.

Oooh, hang on it's working :-/

I only turned up the stat for a couple of seconds before turning it back down. Just turned it up again and the boiler fired up.

Weird because I doubt there was any hot water still in the tank from this am, so not sure why that didn't switch on...

Panic over for now but will keep an eye on it, and maybe get the thermostat and timer replaced as they are absolutely ancient and don't provide any way of scheduling the water / heating separately.

Thanks for your timely help Ferg, any recommendations on the stat/timer?

Try selecting water on-heating off, and visa versa if the bolier fires the motorised valve is u/s

It's important to understand how the system works for fault finding.
When the timer gives out a live it goes to the Room Stat. If that is 'calling', then the live is fed to the motor in the valve. This will then take approximately 20 seconds to open... and then close the microswitch in the valve to feed the live to the boiler.
Since it's now working the valve isn't really suspect.
Sounds more like stat and/or timer.

I had the same problem last year, had to keep turning the stat up and down until the system fired up, then it would work fine for days and suddenly stop working again. I thought it was the thermostat as it was so old, replaced with a nice digital one and still had the same problem. Traced down to the motor in the valve being faulty and wasnt fully opening and hitting the microswitch inside. New motor, problem solved.

The Suprima models that include that range have a common problem of the PCB packing up. Symptoms are that it will go to "Lock out" status, red light flashing on and off, green light off. This can happen intermittently but it's a sign that the PCB is bad (dry soldering joint I think).

rolleyes Calm down MBH, nobody turned down the stat, it's been the same for the last 6 months or so. The system should have kicked in for the hot water.

Ferg - thanks for the explanation. I have tried in the past to understand the system a bit more fully but they all seem to differ slightly. I like to know how things work though smile

Every year I go through the same panic, usually around September when I check everything's working before winter sets in.

The thermostat on mine is a wireless battery powered ne, and every year I forget to change the batteries, cue whacking the temp up on the sender, boiler doing nothing but flashing a red light and me remembering after manually doing it the batteries need changing and then pairing up the system again
