On the advice of a friend I appealed on the council tax band on a house I own and have done since it was new in 1996.....it's been rented out for a while but I've in it in total for roughly 4 out of the 12 years....

Only appealed as I found out of the other 30 identical houses, mine and one either were banded D and the remainder C.

Just found out my appeal was successful and the letter says effective 27/9/1996 (when I bought the house) and they will send the information to the council to prepare a bill (assume they mean rebate/credit as it's downgraded).

Just wondered what is likely to happen now ? Rebate ? And to whom (me or the current or past tenants) ? Is there a limit on how far back they go, if at all ?

Rebate will go to whoever has paid it in the past, so you won't get it all !!

You'll have a nice back dated amount though.

So will it get back dated all the way to 1996 ?

I will get about a quarter of it I guess, and some of the tenants (in fact about another half of the remainder) no longer live in the country.......so guess the council will get to keep that......

We had this on our other house and were initially told that we would not be charged Council Tax until the amount had been used up, so effectively offering us a credit note. Naturally I told the council it could stick its credit note and return the money it had stolen from us; which they duly did.

Cheeky cheeky barstewards irked

Guess I'd better e-mail the tenant and say it's not all her windfall!!!!

Imagine the diff has been about £100 a year so I should still get £300 smile

scratchchin ermm.......not sure about that.

If they can't trace the occupiers at the time then I don't know what they will do with the cash.

It should be backdated to the time specified but give the local council a bell to confirm. I don't think they can limit the amount of time they can go back to to rebate once it has been confirmed that the band should be reduced.

Should be more than a hundred quid difference per band I would have thought.
Especially if your in West Sussex.

Based on this year and single occpuancy the difference is £117.....but would still be nice to get something back....I can actually trace all bar about a year of occupants if they need me to.........................
