Does anyone know much about this place? I drove past it today and was intrigued to find out more about it.

There's a little info on this site http://www.daelnet.co.uk/features/menwithhill/ but nothing really telling.

I find this kind of thing fascinating!

You might find that it's all on a "need to know" basis...

I've played rugby against them a few times. It's like a little american town in North Yorkshire. There crap at rugby, but they seem to have an endless supply of Budweiser (sp). Probably not quiet what you wanted to know.

Same here, I'm always on Google Earth.

Have a look through this site, have GE on too so you can cross reference. It gets addictive

The comedian Mark Thomas discovered that it was legal to overfly it in a ballon, so he did:

Used to know an American skydiver with a TVR who was based there with his wife and kids. Just sounded like a computer boffin.
Might be wrong, but think they get protests from time to time, and police do overtime, public order duties.

I ride up that way regularly and always have a ride-by as curiosity takes hold.
Those pill boxes placed at the entrances are very daunting BTW.

I never stop though as I've been told that birds never fly over as the microwaves transmitted fry them, and that all the guards are remedial Yokels from the deep south(Devon). Who'll shoot you on sight with their microwave ray guns.

P.S from the Mark Thomas site. THE SPY IN...
"Small groups (so that the police couldn't move us on) of highly suspicious people loitering outside the US Embassy brought fairly rapid response from the police who were highly amused. I remember killing myself laughing at the sight of one gentlemen in trenchcoat and hat leaning on a lampost on the corner of the street (cue for a song?), reading a newspaper with two carefully cut out holes in it for him to peer through."

I bet that was funny as funny can be to see that biggrin
