We seem to be having a problem with the local cats using the wood chippings in our front garden as a litter tray. I am convinced the problem has got worse since we got two female kittens in July. It's not our cats as they only venture out as far as the back garden as they are still quite small.

Can anyone offer advice on how to stop this?

Thanks

Rob

ps. If you are going to suggest an air rifle or similar don't bother posting.

Lion st.

You can pick it up from your local zoo and apparently it's quite effective. I don't know what effect it would have on your two cats though.

I bought a spray that seemed to work for a while.

I have hear that urine from a larger animal keeps them away, but have yet to need to take a leak whilst out in the garden so no idea if it works! smile

Not totally ontopic (try the lion poo option) but please don't let your kittens out until after they've been spayed - that will certainly attract the local toms, even if they aren't quite old enough to be in season yet.

Only non violent method is rather time consuming but should work.
Squirt the buggers with water as they are about to do the deed. Even better effect if they don't see you doing it. They'll associate your garden with water and won't try it again.
Of course if the culprit is a Turkish Van cat, it'll come round for a shower everyday.
Good luck!

Lion turds from the zoo is true, works well. You can even buy it mail order now!

In the past, I have got huge bags of cheap chilli powder from the local Indian shop, and spread that around. Seemed to do the trick for cats and foxes!

Buy an ultrasonic cat scarer from B&Q or similar. It is basically a PIR sensor hooked up to an ultrasonic noise generator that frightens cats, runs of a PP3 battery. Painless and harmless, but uncomfortable for the cats. If yours only stray out back and not the front, then you have no worries.

A mixture of orange peel and 'Keep Off' crystals is working for me. Fingers crossed....

I should ahve mentioned I haven't caught any of the cats "at it" so the water pistol won't work.
As for the Lions st idea;
1. Not sure where the local zoo is
2. As someone else mentioned, I don't want to freak out my cats.
Finally in regards to keeping the cats in. We are keeping them in the back garden until they are spayed, but I'm convinced the local toms smelling them and marking there territory is the cause of the problem.

We have two Tom cats and our front garden is like Cat central! My best advice is to just deal with it. Cats are cats. Its like having a baby and complaining about sleepless nights ... it just goes with the territory unfortunately.

Good luck with your kittens though. Ours have just turned 1 year old and we still worry about them getting into fights with the locals. "Gifts" in the garden are the least of our worries!
