Here's the thing, I have a vacancy for a driver. I have interviewed this bloke and he seems okay. I have intimated that the job will be his once he has his taxi badge, but made no firm offer. This was a few weeks ago. He is still waiting for his badge which is imminent in the next few days. However, I am now having second thoughts, something about him I can't put my finger on, too picky, too 'in yer face'. For example, he pointed out three times that a car's tax was about to expire in a week's time. Yes, I know, not your problem mate I have the paperwork ready to go, etc, etc.

Now, how do I let him down, whilst still keeping face?

This is for a taxi driver right, and not a chauffer?

Tell him that business is down and that you don't need to recruit at the moment. Tell him before he gets his badge though, so you can remind him just how 'recruitable' he'll be to other firms as he'll have the appropriate qualification.

Just tell him you can't wait any longer, and that you're sorry but the position is no longer available.

That's it.

This badge you talk about, is it like the ones they wear in Mc Donalds?

Why not give him a trial period while looking for someone else? If he's still not quite right, bin him and bring the other person in. Telling you about the tax could show he has attention to detail.

Sounds to me like more than 'intimation'. Has he spent any money or deferred any other offers on the strength of this?

He was pointing out a basic admin issue (ie road tax) and that suggests he will be a crap employee??

You're crackers. Most employees don't give a st about anything other than when you are going to pay them. At least he is taking an interest in stuff.

Please don't fire me before I even start.....

..edit to add..

have you changed the tax disc yet....
