Now and then, old school friends (and people I went to school with who I never really liked or got on with but for some reason remember me) will send me one of those 'friend request' things on Facebook. Not wanting to seem rude, I generally accept them and then have a bit of a look to see what they're doing in life and how they are - exchange a few pleasantries etc.

But, and here it comes...

Why oh WHY is it that almost without exception, they've mutated like some horrific genetic experiment? It's only been 15 years. How is that time enough to triple in width? Why is it that so many of them who used to be generally accepted within the school as being pretty sexy or at least pleasant looking now have faces like a blancmange that's been chucked off a multistorey? I mean, I would probably not make it as a print model, but I'm told I'm not bad for a 31 yr old. All the people I'm friends with now of similar ages don't look like hell. The people I work with don't either.

Is such marked deterioration a symptom of remaining living up North?

Does anyone else find this? (And do you take any guilty pleasure in seeing the sixth form stunner reduced to the level of a Jeremy Kyle Show reject? I do....)

Why are you so shallow that it matters what a friend looks like? Being a 'nice person' count for nothing?

People change.

It's a law that all the awesome cool hot people in school will be wasters and losers when they're older and the uncool nerdy ones will be awesome hot millionaires that spend all day awesomeing in their mansions and jets.

Apart from me, I've always been awesome and will continue to be so, 24/7. True story.

20-30 yrs old....

Job, debts, partners = Stress.

General weight gain, baldness, and the sinking feeling that life has not worked out the way you wanted it.

So yes friends from school do change, generally for worse.

Point missed completely. Given that I share a common background with most of these people, it just surprises me that in such a short time people can change so much - I wouldn't even recognise half of them. I know things can happen which make people "lose it", so to speak - various vices, having a hard life, illnesses etc etc but that wouldn't be all of them.

Most people are simply to lazy to be bothered to keep in shape or dress well in the UK these days.

All part of the British disease.

You're actually surprised because people can change in a short space of time....do you live in a cave or something? or is your life so boring that nothing has changed?

general rule...
popular girls - get pregnant - stay fat
popular guys - bachelor lifestyle - too much beer - get fat
geeky guys - go to uni - get rich + discover hair gel - get hot wives
geeky girls - go to uni - discover hair straighteners + makeup - get married to hot guy
