In a couple of weeks I'll be off on "Boys on Tour", the annual pilgrimage of a group of locals from the village pub for a couple of days of golf and drinking.

This year we're off to Oxford so I'm looking for recommendations of bars, pubs, curry houses and possibly some of those dancing clubs of the lap variety that appear to be the mainstay of the lads night out.

Not exactly a young crowd - age range is mid to late 30's to 50's and 60's - so none of these trendy new discothèque venues we keep hearing about in the country is going to be suitable.

Thanks in advance.

Depends what you want. There are some fairly oldie pubs in oxford. Kings arms, anything in Jerico is usally good.

Bars, there are loads, I really like All Bar One, which is next too Quads. Both early evening places.

Avoid: The goose (was shut for a bit), old fire station and park end street.

Well as to what we want, somewhere with good beer and a decent pub atmosphere. Not looking for pubs/bars with loud music/nowhere to sit.

There is a Jongleurs in Oxford which might be worth checking out who's on because they tend to have good acts there. I saw Jimmy Carr there once ages ago.

There is a Thai restaurant over the road from Jongleurs (forgotten the name) bloody gorgeous food and well priced and I distinctly remember the lads in the group I was in being very impressed with the Thai waitresses!!

You'll be dissapointed if you are looking for lap-dance clubs. Oxford council won't allow them (AFAIK). Nearest will be Banbury or Milton Keynes.

ETA, Baby Bar on Cowley road may still have Pole-dancing on a Sunday night. Probably not the type of place you are looking for though!

The Thai over the road from Jongleurs is called Bangkok House and is very good.

Have a look here for a decent oxford pub / restuarant guide:

Bangkok House.

The area around the old Jail is nice too.....lots a new pubs and bars/ restaurents there.

In old centre around the colleges, the Turf is worth a visit....although it's tiny. as is the Blue Boar back from the High Street.

Jericho definitely. There's a whole load of pleasant proper pubs up the whole st, a Browns restaurant and a late night v trendy pizza place that does late night jazz into the early hours.

Which is ironic given that they're the biggest bunch of wkers out.

Loads of good old school pubs in Oxford, Lamb&Flag and Baby&Bird on St.Giles, Kings Tavern at the end of Broad Street, Bear in Alfred Street, St. Aldates Tavern etc. etc. If you head down Cowley or Iffley roads you've got more studenty (as opposed to student and dons etc) places like the Bullingdon.

St. Aldates Tavern is in er...St. Aldates near the top on the right if you're heading out towards Christchurch College.
