repairing/renovating sandstone

the front of my house has a small sandstone wall, and sandstone window surrounds.
currently they have all been painted with masonry paint, and i want to remove this and make the stone look new.
on the wall i had a few blocks loose,and i couldnt decide what to bed them back in with so i used waterproof tile adhesive ! this seems to have worked well.
i tried to strip the masonry paint tonite with paint stripper and it worked well, but the sandstone needs 'sanding' or such to bring it up.
i know you can buy bags of sandstone repair from the builders merchants but have never used it.
