Keep seeing this on TV, and it makes me want to kick the screen.

Just as guns were banned, air pistols, and now knives.

When are social engineers going to learn that you can't blame knife culture on the knife itself. It is the most absurd piece of thinking I've ever come across.

It seems they are willing to repeat the same mistakes they made with guns and call it a victory for common sense.

When your average deprived, and aggrieved hoodie runs out of illegal sharp objects, he's obviously just going to use his feet and hands. Meanwhile, the rest of us will have just about everything some lentilist believes could be used as a dangerous weapon banned.

What annoys me is the duplication of laws when the first isn't enforced properly causing the problem in the first place.

Air guns being the classic example, it was already illegal to shoot someone/someones pet/property with an airgun, but the courts never came down on people being stupid with them, so what was the answer to the problem of a minority of users? Well restrict them for the law abiders of course. So now if your a chav and want an airgun you can still find a cheap and nasty chinese jobby from a variety of sources, if however your a sportsman and want a new air rifle you have to go and collect it from a shop possibly paying RFD transfer fees in the process, consequently the guns have gone up in price.

Illegal firearms - solution outlaw firearms! It's just so stupid it's almost funny, I'm not naive and am fully aware of the fact a few legal gun owners (that should never have been allowed to own guns in the first place) have committed some atrocities, but now these nutters just use samurai swords etc. Criminals still use illegal guns. Who's lost out? Oh yeah the legal owners.

And now knives, now I'm the first one who thinks that the people who collect knives/samurai swords/blank firers/deactivated guns are all a bit strange, it all smacks a bit of the middle aged bloke still living in his mums house prancing around in his pants in his bedroom pretending to be James Bond/Rambo etc. Bit disturbing, but I can't see how anyone with half a brain can try to control a pure tool like a knife, it's at the point now where if a kid carried a penknife (as I did as a kid and somehow managed to resist stabbing anyone) then they are committing a crime, I carry a technically illegal knife at the moment, it is a tiny (circa 1") lock knife with a serated edge, it gets used daily for everything from cutting and baring wires, roadside repairs on cars, cutting small branches, all sorts of little jobs, yet that's illegal.

Awesome country I just love it.

Agree with everything, except this bit:

They are strange because you do not understand why they do it? It's that thinking which gets things banned in the first place. Just because you don't want to do it, doesn't mean that somebody else shouldn't.

+1

on both the agreement with everything else and also to the problem with that statement.

I have a few knives around the house, but they all serve their purpose, like cutting things for example smile

Besides, the vast majority of knife crime is committed with kitchen varities, not some blokes Klingon death blade replica!

Everyone I have known that has collected those sort of items, (apart from the ones who actually go out shooting) have been weird.

Not saying its not their right to be weird and collect that stuff, but they were definately weird.

Mind you could be like virtually all non car enthusiasts thinking I'm a chav because I have a loud exhaust...

+ 1 again. Some day, someone will think that owning a car collection (they kill the planet, remember?) is a little strange.

Does this mean that it's going to become harder to buy a decent set of kitchen knives? I need some new ones.

Will they also ban anything that can be used to turn a piece of metal into a sharp piece of metal?

Enthusiasts of any sort can seem weird to others. It's what they enjoy and I'll defend their right to do it.

Indeed. Just ask the missus after she's stood next to a group of blokes at a kit car show talking about diff ratios hehe

I read it more being in agreement in whilst he may find it a bit weird, he saw no reason in trying to control (ie ban) it.

I spent July in France.

I every town of any size there would be a shop window full of knives of all sizes and shapes, most of which would be illegal here.

The French do not have a knife crime problem...

Indeed. Sadly, only the stupid believe that banning a weapon will reduce the crime figures.

It's the attitude in the UK that needs to be changed.
