An Ex colleague of mine used to tell us he was a Sea Harrier pilot in the Falklands War. He had photos of himself next to a Harrier in all his flying gear and had some great stories to tell about all the missions he flew during the war. I spent many hours talking about it with him and enjoyed listening to his accounts of the war.

It's not that unusual in my company and there are many people from that kind of background including ex red arrows, gulf war pilots, WW2 warbird display aircraft guys, aerobatic and gliding champions etc etc.

Now he has left my company and went abroad to work it turns out he made the whole thing up.

It is possible he flew sea kings in the Royal Navy but certainly not the Sea Harrier. It's odd though that he came from this background any yet chose to construct these lies about himself. I expect he wanted to fly the Harrier or commenced the course but failed. There is no shame in that but for him he clearly felt he needed to create some other past for himself.

I can understand these people just lying once when they were drunk and then kind of having to keep the story going but this guy would offer up these great tales including photos and elaborate details without being prompted.

I'm sure we all know people on here who quite frankly are internet fantasists but to me, that's different to talking one on one with someone and making up complete new pasts about themselves.

Has anyone else met any of these Walter Mitty characters?

There's a kit at my son's school who's 9. He has told my son that his dad has an aeroplane at RAF Northolt and he's going to bomb our house.

I told my son to say that if he tells stupid stories again I'll tell everyone about his dad having an affair and catching clap. Which is true smile

He's also claimed that he was late for a class because he was being interviewed by the BBC.

Not quite in the same league, but it made me laugh at the time.

I used to work on Sea Harriers, and when we were in the States one of our squadron chefs would try to pull the local women by telling them he was the inflight caterer for the Harrier pilots. biglaugh I've had a few so called friends tell me what they did in the forces. Yet they were so easy to disprove that it wasn't worth them telling the stories as they just came across as complete idiots

I know someone who spent a fair while telling the most wonderful porkies to anyone who would listen on a t'internet forum. Problem was she then took the persona she created online and met people off said forum and slept with one (or more, who knows) of them.

I then divorced the sg. smile

Happy days.

Plenty.... mainly people who are trying to get one up on everyone else. Gave up trying many years ago. Some take this as me being very shy or private - its not, just cant be arsed doing the "I am better than you" game.... boring.

In a reverse of this, my BiL was a pilot in the RAF though not combat jets. He is actually very private about his time in the RAF. He has paintings of every plane he has flow, but refuses to have any pictures of him in / on / with them. He has loads of pictures, but doesn't show any of them....

You want to know why guys do it (as it is mainly guys)?

Because women are gullible enough to believe them and always get their knicks off after a good story hehe

Mate of mine knew some guys that were RAF pilots. Of course, everyone from the RAF base used to say they were pilots when out on the pull, which was starting to wear thin on the ladies of the town. So these two used to make out they were builders just passing through. Very effective apparently.

I used to work with a bloke who really fancied himself (and wasn't actually that good / bright). When we worked with him there were people around who had known him since his school days and basically we all knew that had been a banker since leaving Uni and then after a few years joined our firm to get qualified. He used to really big himself up but basically since he was known by a few didn't tell that many porkies.

He left to join an investment bank and a couple of years later we found out he had told his new colleagues that he had been special forces during the first Gulf war in the early 90s. Complete bullsh*t he had sat behind a desk at one of the big banks during the early 1990s. Loser.
