The Times said:
Cats Protection has emerged as the latest and biggest charity victim of the Icelandic banking crisis with £11.2 million of deposits in Kaupthing Singer and Friedlander now at risk.

A spokeswoman for the charity said plans for a series of new adoption centres for abandoned and unwanted cats could now be in jeopardy, although day-to-day operations at the charity would not be affected.

"The only areas of Cats Protection’s work that may be affected will be those plans around future new facilities," she said.

“Cats Protection believes there is a case to be made to the Treasury that its particular deposits are public money that has been donated for us to help cats and provide benefits to the public. The charity feels strongly that public deposits should be safeguarded."

there will be no end of this. Bloke on radio this morning from children's hospice. They had put 10 million or so into Iceland banks. He said if they can bail out banks and fat cats they can bail out the children's hospice.

Don't trustees understand what 'trustee' entails??

Is it too difficult to manage large sums of savings by spreading it around a bit?

I'm at a loss on this type of thing, where should charities put their money to avoid it being spunked up by the barrow boys.

They are more than happy to use the interest they get on their accounts no?

So if they are happy to receive money the bank has made by having their deposit, they should equally expect it to be lost if things go wrong.

If they are so concerned, why put all their eggs in one basket?

They are all a load of pussies anyway.

I have no sympathy for their cat-astrophic loss.

I think I can answer that one with some simple words:

Charity

Other People's Money

For doing nice stuff

Lots of eggs

One Basket
(thanks littlegreenfairy)

People in charge of finance should watch what is happening

They got greedy and chased the highest interest

Some people saw this coming from iceland

They didn't act quickly enough

Probably too busy spending their fundraising 'BONUSSES' to care. Yes professional fundraisers get paid!

At least some of that will be true.

In theory they were being risk averse....just keeping it on deposit. In all fairness until a year ago the idea of large banks simply failing hadn't crossed peoples minds as it hadn't happened for so long.

Maybe they could/should have diversified.....but that's with hindsight.

It is awful if genuine charities are affected.....and of course retail savers as well. Tis easy to say people were stupid....but then people trusted the regulators to have a clue about hwat they were doing...and for that matter the rating agencies as well.

I think that SAVINGS should be absolutely guaranteed, otherwise why not keep them under the bed?

Investments, on the other hand, involve an element of risk, so should not be protected.

Fine line, I know, but I have savings, which I am not prepared to gamble with, and I have some investments, which I am. I expect to get a better return on my investments, but realise that I might not, in fact I might lose the lot.

I chose to take the risk on some of my money, but not all.
