Now I know everyone thinks their kids are great, blameless etc but what amuses me is the way parents say things without a hint of embarrassment or self consciousness about the skills, traits and future of their kids. Cannot they hear how they sound?

Point in case, my neighbour's 14 year old. Nice lad, well behaved, does well at school etc. but his Mum has become a point of some fun in our house because of the tales she tells about him and the aspirations she holds. He sits there, like most 14 year olds and never utters a word, engrossed all the time in his Xbox all hours of the day and night. Lives on a diet of Cheese and Onion crisps, no real hobbies except xbox. Basically a retarded Bart Simpson on Ritalin.

When we first met her 5 year ago he was going to be a dentist, defo. Then he was going to be a professiional footballer because he captained the primary school team, but she wouldn't allow him to play in any other side because their weekends were 'special'. Of course many Premiership footballers go straight from the school team, playing half a dozen games a season, to taking spot kicks at Arsenal of a Saturday without doing the Saturday/Sunday games, whole county side thing . Then he was going to be an author because his English was so great (surprising since she does most of his home work and course work) and 'always had a book in his hand'. I am not sure he knows what a book is unless it is digital and used to cast a spell in some fantasy game. Then he was going to play badminton in the 2012 Olympics because he played on a Friday night with the neighbour, who is an adult and he beat him. This week he may be gifted enough to be a stage comedian because he has such comic timing. This is the lad who took the huff when I took the pi55 out of his teeth and asked if his mates mother was his girfriend. At this point I was nearly wetting myself trying to stiffle the laughter because she was so serious. In the next breath his talent with young children (evidenced by the fact that in primary school the younger kids used to read to him) he was to be a primary school teacher. For his part the plan seems to be to leave school ASAP and let his Mum and dad continue to run him around and buy him stuff.

Come on parents, you can be proud of them without making a fool of yourself in public. What part of the self-consciousness of a parent switches off when they have kids such that they can't see what they look/sound like. It starts with the babysick on the shoulder, through the preoccupation with ballet and gymnastics. Every kid in the world must be on the schools 'gifted and talented' programme.

A little bit before I became a parent just over four years ago, I swore I wouldn't try to live my child(ren)'s life for them. The reason was because of my long time friend who's (non-identical) twins had become performing seals. Every time I saw him he'd be getting them to 'do tricks' to his wife's dismay.

This of course was to wallpaper over his own insecurities. Basically showing everyone how clever his children were to detract from the fact that he was, (and probably still is!), a complete idiot.

His wife left him, (unsurprisingly! And man, was she a fox!?!? How does that happen?), and around the same time he became a Policeman.

That's all. rolleyes

No, that's not all! Everyone thinks their child(ren) is/are special, and to a certain degree thay are, but when you start to shove their talents, (or covering for the lack of your talents!), down everyone's throat, then it becomes a problem. All the time I hear about kids who's parents are sending them to private school, (three of them), and the youngest doesn't quite cut the mustard so he's subject to private tuition so he makes the grade. Parent's who won't send their children to the local school because it 'used' to have a bad name when in fact it's one of the best schools in the county. I've even heard third party about parents who lie bare facedly about their TENNIS record and who force their children to get up at 4 in the morning and feed them on little other than boiled eggs before they train for two hours before going to school just so the parent s can look good!!!.

F*ck me it can get right twisted!!

Edited To Add one comma and two question marks.

Edited again to add the last bit.

Rose tinted specs.

A bit like those parents who say "my boy would never do such a thing" when accused of anything.
