So, the OH got given one of them chimeneas (not the TVR, the burny thing you put in your garden) for her birthday.

This weekend, she decided it was time to give it it's inaugural burning, as it was a fairly mild night.

So, we sallied forth to the woods, replete with wheelbarrow, and gathered wood.

Got back to hers and she said "I'll sort out dinner, you get the fire going."

Piece of piss, I thought. It was a case of "Stand back, love, I'll handle this - fire-making is Man's work."

Well, after about 20 minutes, I had a pitiful pile of ash and some slightly singed twigs.

OH comes out and says "Oh no, you're doing it all wrong..." and then proceeds to get a roaring fire going in about 2 minutes.

Turns out that her "job" as a youngster was to set the fire in the family house, so she's an expert in fire-starting. She rolled up bits of paper (the Telegraph) into balls and got the fire going in no time.

I now feel slightly less manly.

You hopeless excuse for a man. I suppose you're no use for swinging a club and keeping dinosaurs away from the cave either?

ummm.... no offence. But how did you fail to make a fire given some wood and I presume some matches. AND ready access to paper/petrol/ possibly even fire lighters.

Ok i've not done it since I was about 14 but just matches and wood used to be enough for us scouts....

I did suggest this, also the use of the plentiful supply of propane (she lives in one of them static caravans), but both were dismissed as "cheating".

Hmmm. "Slightly less manly" does not equate to "totally ghey".

I still have a modicum of manliness left. Somewhere.

If it's any consolation, MOH is the same....but with practise he's improved.

My mother always made me start the fires and look after them too smile
