built in wardrobe for GF
Discussion
GF wants to have a built in wardrobe in one of the spare bedrooms we have, ideally she wants somethiing like this
http://www.decorreport.com/images/en/146177.jpg where its all open and you just build the shells. Where best would I get the material for such a project?
Anyone done anything like this before?
Thx

Ikia aint a bad idea....yes gonna do it myself with a joiner mate if I buy just the pieces of material
Best if you take 'er indoors to Ikea, or get their catalogue, so she can choose from all the different drawers and racks and shelves and hangers etc. That'll give you measurements to work to.The benefit of also buying the carcass from Ikea is that all the holes will be pre-drilled and properly aligned, though obviously, if you want a full floor to ceiling, wall to wall affair you'll need to sort the timber yourself.
One thing to note: if you wanted to sell the house, would the conversion (i.e. loss) of a bedroom be an attractive feature?
All this talk of Ikea is a good idea but have you/she seen the Stolmen range Ikea do?
It is made up of floor to ceiling (adjustable height) poles finished in grey.
The poles look a bit like scaffold poles and give a very contemporary look.
You simply fit the poles where you want them and "clamp" on bits and pieces where required.
You can have drawers, shelves, trouser racks, shoe racks, hooks, etc.
I have them in my house on 3 walls going around the room. Very verastil and can be added to/removed as required.
I'd take a pic to give you an idea but I've just dismantled them as I'm moving into a new flat.

They are great, I've used them in one of my bathrooms, but I get the feeling the OP's missus wants to create a high quality effect; IMO Stolmen is more 'practical' than 'posh'.It is made up of floor to ceiling (adjustable height) poles finished in grey.

Have a look in the big sheds for Conti board.
There's a discount shed near me that sells the stuff very cheaply. Did one wall of a spare bedroom with floor to ceiling shelves for under £100 and a days labour.
Or just buy some very small garden sheds and use them, with the doors off? There's a discount shed near me that sells the stuff very cheaply. Did one wall of a spare bedroom with floor to ceiling shelves for under £100 and a days labour.
Or just drive hooks into the bedroom walls, run string between them, tightly, and hang the hangers on them. That way it is even more minimalistic and you can wow her with your cutting edge designer eye. Maybe...

God, I'd want/need doors on that, it would NEVER look that neat, and would only really work if you colour coded everything & hung it together in blocks of colour, and noone is that OCD, not even Sleeps

Some of the Ikea ones will go floor to ceiling, either as the base unit, or with 'highteners'

Depends how it is done, if it is drilled into the wall, probably not.If it is an Ikea job, ie freestanding, it will make no difference, especially if you have enough room in there to put a sofa(bed) in the middle, as you can take them with you
Plus it gives her somewhere to sit & put her shoes on/admire her shoe collection
I'd still want doors on it tho. Mirrored sliding ones
So I can see my bum looking fat in my outfit from all angles without him telling me

Not if they live in a nice Victorian house they won't!
They sell bits to go on the top
