"It's just not fair"

I feel sorry for some of them but did they not realise that investing in houses or the stock exchange entails some level of risk?

As for the golf playing company director my heart bleeds for him.

Is it time to buy shares in banks - yes seriously.

If say i bought £1000/shares in 5 banks and looked at it as a long term 5-10 year investment would it be worth it?

Im talking as someone with extra cash, in no debt at all but have never delt with shares?

If you can afford to lose all the money then why not have a punt if you're feeling brave?

tempting, can banks really go out of business? Surely this is not a terminal problem and at some point in the future things will rise again, im not looking at making a massive short term profit.

Doesn't appear so. Must be a good investment.....

Oh look. The BBC journalist who leaked the Treasury talks with the banks last week which caused the markets to plummet. Ah well, wasn't his pension that took a beating.

Things still might go tits up. The country is in/possibly heading for recession which would mean loss of confidence in banks.
also whats going to happen with these credit default swap things. I know nothing of finance but it sounds to me like these could serously fk everything up

They have been on about them a few times this week on radio 4(first time ive heard of them).
but it sdoes sound like it could go very badly. Banks will be paying out on them but not getting money back in on their CDSs' because of other banks that have gone bust leading to a chain reaction.

thats seemed to be the general gist of it

UK banks are into these CDSs' to the tune of trillions!

Banks will never be allowed to make the amount of profit as they have done in the past - therefore low share price/dividends. IMO not a good buy.

If the goverment really are going to print money then buying shares in De La Rue would be a better bet. They print all the UK's bank notes as well a many other countries notes.

Nah, not banks. Maybe gold. I was on the point of investing some of my savings in gold at the beginning of the year but I bottled out at the last moment. If I'd have gone ahead I would've made five times the interest I'm currently getting on my savings accounts. Even now I'm talking about it and I could still invest but I doubt I will, and I'll likely be moaning about the same damn thing next year. I'm a sad no-risk-taking whiner, really.

I do remember asking on here 18 months or longer ago how the banks were making money from all these deals and did the money actual exist.

Only to be told I didn't know what I was talking about and that the finance industry was making a fortune for the country. Actually seems to have come damned close to bankrupting it!

Don't worry. It's currently worth less than it was on 1st January 2008. That is assuming you're not a very astute trader, and given that you are a "no-risk-taking whiner", I am assuming that you're not, therefore you wouldn't have sold at the peak and will now be kicking yourself. thumbup

Your and my contrasting views have just shown why share prices are what they are...we'll see who's right in 5 years!
