First thought would to check the outlet hose to see if there is a kink in it. Also check that the connection to the waste-pipe is OK with no obstructions etc.

I'd say you've opened it before the cycle had completed. I've done it before now and it's supprisingly easy. Try switching it off for 40 seconds and then put it on rinse cycle and it should clear it.

If not, try pulling it out and lowering the drain into a washing up bowl so it's as low as possible. This should empty the waste water and then try putting it on for an intensive wash. Is there a drain filter inside it? Try cleaning this once the water is cleared and restart it.

My washer recently stopped with a full load in it. Once i'd drained the water out I found a blockage in the outlet filter and once cleared the thing sprung into life again.

Check the drain pipe didn't come with a wee plug on the end - I installed a dishwasher with one of those still in place once.....

google for the name of the item, with manual in the search perhaps

if it is new, why do you not have the manuals ?

When mine did this I unplugged it, Pulled it out and tipped it backwards.

This drained out all the water and it worked again.

I believe there is some kind of safety feature which cuts out the pump if the filters get blocked or there is a problem with the water outlet.

Check the sump as well... stuff can get trapped in it and prevent it emptying... it'll be under the colander looking thing, just remove the cover (usually unscrew by hand) and have a look to see if anything is in the way. Mine once got blocked by a little plastic bottle rip-n-pull closure that had fallen in the machine and blocked the outlet.

Is it 'ebay new' wink

LOL, mine was, no shame there mate. But googling manuals is great. Saved me a lot of hunting... it's amazing what a model number does in google these days smile

take a deep breath and blow down the hose and see if it bubbles up inside. are there any error codes in the display (if it has one)

otherwise do as said above pull it out and tilt it back. My mrs AB is too lazy to do this and just runs a rinse cycle and it clears itself

Its new as in I bought it off a friend who got free appliances with a new kitchen.
Not sure if thats better or worse than e bay???
I have got the manual, the question is where is the bloody thing (seem to have put it down and no idea where it is)

I cant run a rinse cycle as it wont run anything, and dispays a red light above a tap symbol, indicating that it needs draining, but wont bloody do it.

I may just belt the granny out of it and get another

I've had just the same with my Bosch dishwasher. I called the Bosch engineer out, and after much head-scratching since it all seemed perfect when being put through the various tests he could do, it was found to be the tilt sensor. Make sure the dishwasher is sitting absolutely flat. Once I'd sorted that it ran perfectly.

Cheers for that ASP.

Will try it later on, and that may make some sense, as the bloody thing toppled forward the other day due to the weight of the stuff resting on the door

Is it your first dishwasher, or is it a replacement?

When we refitted the kitchen and added a dishwasher, it wouldn't drain to begin with - turned out the connector on the sink u-bend / trap to which I had attached the drain hose to had never been used before and had a blocking piece still in it.

Yep. Most decent brand dishwashers are incredibly sensitive to how level they are; to the extent that some declare the warranty automaticaly void if you don't get a qualified engineer to install them because of the 'levelling' required.
