Had one of these earlier in Boots for £15. Well worth it IMO - an achey arm's much better than the flu! You can almost smell the germs on the tube. It better bloody work!

Each to their own, i hope they work for you, i just keep warm and drink plenty of fluids, tends to keep most things away, followed by lots(and i DO mean lots) of medication when ever i feel like a cold is coming!!

I think Sainsbury's are £12 and Asda are £10.50 smile

I'm going to have one this year, just getting over a dose of flu, very unpleasant.

I should be getting mine from the doctors soon as I'm in one of the at risk groups, but I haven't been sent a letter about it yet

I thought there were different strains of viral Flu.

Are all these 'over the counter jabs" using the same medicine or will it depend on the brand? How do they judge which Flu to combat or are they going for the most common?

Anyone know?

You do know there will never be a cure for the common cold made available to the public as there is too much money to be lost in supplying all the other cold remidies such as Lemsip, Vick's, Tunes, Handy wipes etc etc.

Indeed

Different strains, and each year the goverment takes advice on the most likely one to cause problems for that year

So thats the one you get (at the GP at least)

Heres hoping they choose right, eh?

I saw some prog on tv that reckoned flu cases had not decreased at all since the annual flu jabs had come into vogue. Maybe it is the aged population increasing that offsets the figures, but who knows?

I am eligible to get one every year as I'm a summer asthmatic, but I never bothered this year. I don't really see how they can 'predict/guess' which one to jab you for and hope it is the right one. More over-medication I reckon.

....and now, of course, I will catch every flu bug that passes north of the Mediterranean!

Ha, you're right as I read there's something like 200 different strains.

I travel around the world alot and by air but I swear I get a cold more when I am in the UK. More people spreading the germs in a closer enviroment, like tubes , trains and buses?

I'm also asthmatic (wife thinks she's just good in bed laugh)but I found the last time I had a jab it just gave me the flu , is'nt it actually just giving you a small dose to stimulate the immune system ?

Nope, it's an "inactivated" vaccine so it can't give you any of the 3 strains of flu that it is protecting you against. Mild fever and a local skin reaction are possibilities.

Always worry about the mis-use of the term "flu". Most people's flu is infact a heavy cold. Dr Hilary Whatsisname summed it up quite nicely on TV a couple of years ago. He said that if you were lying in bed with proper flu and you spotted a bunch of £20 notes blowing about in your back garden you wouldn't have the energy to get up and pick them up - I reckon that's spot on.

Wise move to get the Pneumonia jab, I lost my mother to Pneumonia last year. Strange how some doctors offer this jab but not others, it should be offered by them all.
