Functional CV over traditional

Trying to update the CV in order to gain employment after a bit of a career change. Someone has suggested that a Functional CV may be a better route for me as it highlights transferrable skills. However, I wonder if it may be seen as an attempt to gloss over non-existant gaps.

I was wondering what the professional opinion of job-hunters, head-hunters and recruiters as well as employers on here.

I'd want to see the whole picture. What exactly is the difference between the two? I mean a CV that everyone normally uses (or regular, if you're American) is functional, isn't it? It's not supposed to describe what you like watching on TV.
