We live on road which is a bit out of the way, theres about 25 houses & everybody knows everyone.
Last night one of our neighbours awoke to their dogs barking, he went downstairs & found somebody in his back garden at 3,30 in the morning staring back at him.
He called the police then banged on the window but the guy had run off.
Another neighbour also had something stolen from their car.
Burglars on our road don't come around very often (maybe once every 4/5 years).
Last time my dad chased one with a pitchfork but he got away.
Now i know this is a hypothetical question but in your position what would you of done if it was you who saw someoen in your back garden at that time of the morning?
I have a snooker cue that i would like to put good use to & although i wouldnt actively start a fight if i found someone on my property at that time of the morning intent on doing wrong i would think twice about giving them a hiding.
Just wandered what your opinions were?

1. Discreetly make sure all doors are locked.

2. Take a flash photograph of them smile / Video if possible

3. Call the cops

4. If they are still there after the 45min response time - get worried smile

5. Ensure backup Maglite/Hunting Blade/Shotgun are readied*

NO-ONE "knows" what they'd do until it happens.

Most people would start off pole-axed, thinking what the f**k, probably panic maybe. You just don't know what you'd do until in that position.

Sure everyone will post what they think they'd like to do when in that position but the reality my be somewhat different.

I would run outside completely stark-bk-naked screaming 'cock'.

Pretty sure that would scare them off.

I've been burgled once, many years ago, it's not nice. It affected my girlfriend a lot more as I used to work away a lot leaving her alone in the house alone. If I caught anyone trying to gain entry to my house whilst I and my girlfriend were in it nowadays, I would not hesitate to beat the living st out of them and deal with the consequences of my actions later.

I know people say I'd be in the wrong, but the 'punishment' dished out by the 'justice' system would no doubt otherwise be insufficient.

I have a black Widow Catapult in my bedside drawer along with some large ball bearings, (For chasing cats etc. out off the garden) whistle

Now if I were to be accidentally carrying it at 3 in the morning & heard a noise downstairs.....

Thats what i think i'd do, act now worry about it later, it'd give me much more satisfaction giving them a hiding than seeing them get a sentence to paint benches for a day!

Defend with "minimum force"

Friend lives in a nice road not far from me, about 3 months ago they were sat in the living room chatting (him, his wifeand his cousin)

Wife shouts "theres someone out there!"

Sure enough, my mate and his cousin run out the patio doors and this guys stood by the car in his garden trying to get in it, so my mate shouts some loud expletive that brings everyone out in their gardens and this guy hot foots it off over the fences and somehow escapes

He was due to go away that weekend but his Mrs was too st scared to be her own, bds

Anyway, down the pub last Thursday and turns out his roads been hit again with 20 odd houses having the lead nicked off their porch roofs (luckily he had a different style, hence no lead)

Interestingly enough, his next door neighbours CID

I'd get naked, "fluff" myself til I was erect and then shout "bend over, this is going to hurt."

I reckon they'd run.

Exactly. Imagine you didn't do anything and they got away. You'd spend the rest of your time worrying about when they're going to come back, creaking floorboards etc.

What I did do after our burglary was invest in decent security. Decent locks, shock sensors on windows etc. Alarm is armed every night when we go to bed so at least if anyone does try and get in, I should know about it before they actually do get in thanks to the shock sensors.

While on the subject I think what happened to Tony Martin was a disgrace

My house/property not yours, if you try and steal/attack it you then deserve all thats coming to you

TM like most of in that situation, acted on the spur of the moment

Englishmans home is his castle, etc,etc

Our road's a decent road, last time this thing happened everyone (vast majority) invested in CCTV cameras, some in electric code entry gates & some have sensors on the fences / boundaries of their houses.
A lot of houses have silent alarms direct to the security companies & i think every house has a dog!
I wouldnt hesitate in confrontation with them as i've always been an act now and worry about it later kind of person.
I just wandered what the vast majority would do
