I've noticed several religous types are into tracing their family's roots. Does anyone know who's got closest to Adam and Eve yet -- or has anyone actually got back all the way?

Is there a website like SETI at home or those scientists mapping the human genome where I can check progress?

I only normally do SP&TL and Porsche so I'm never sure about GG and P&P.

I guess using the Bible and the list of the Patriachs one can get from Adam to Jesus. If one uses Dan Brown's da Vinci Code or the earlier Holy Blood Holy Grail I think there is a chap in France who is the mentioned as the true decendant and ruler of the world - or something like that.

Many ancient Kings had a geneology that showed a God at the top of the tree - see for example Herodotus (400BC) Although someone said it really meant "and God knows who his (grand)father was".

The Hashamite Kings setup after WW1 (T.E Lawrence etc) claim decend from Fatimah, the daughter of Mohammad, the prophet, so that could be seen as close. See Kings of Jordon, Sryia, Iraq (opps!) and Mecca (although then taken by ibn Saud)

I think the Church of the Later Day Saints (The Mormons) is keen on converting the ancestors, so they have spent a considerable effort of geneology. I guess their project is the closest to what you're after. See their Family Search website.

In the BBC programme Who Do You think you are the rower Matthew Pinsett had his line traced back to Adam (by way of one of Henry VIII wives).
