Could do with some advice.

Long story short.

Bought a laptop from bloke off ebay, seller wanted paying by cheque - agreed to pay via bank transfer. Laptop took ages to arrive. Finally did arrive, but with cracked screen. Rejected delivery and complained to bloke and DHL. Still no cashback. No laptop. Bloke no longer registered on ebay, won't answer phone.

Pretty sure you are screwed, as Ebay only cover deals done through Paypal.

Best you can hope for is to try and claim off DHL, if it was insured, but I think you would need the sellers cooperation for this.

Chalk it down to experience, Ebay is riddled with scammers these days.

Do you have sellers address ?

Send him a polite threat.
Then send him a threat.#
Then serve the threat.

I bought a car part on ebay for £20 in the spring of this year.
The guy sounded like a scroat but I gambled that I'd only be loosing £15 if it never turned up, which it didn't.

No point in me getting upset about it as it was a calculated risk and I was saving money on paying a dealer anyway, as an aside I recently found the part in a scrap yard and it still didn't fix the problem.

Moral of the story is never buy anything expensive on ebay unless you're going to collect in person and pay up front.
