I had a piece of equipment which needed repair. Sent it to the company it was bought from and after receiving it, they confirmed that it can be repaired and would only cost £47.00 including carriage and VAT. The chap on the phone asked for a fax number to send me the quote; told him to email it as well as to accept a verbal go-ahead etc etc. He then transferred the call to a lady who took payment of - as she confirmed - £47.00.

I've just taken delivery of the 'tool' and they've included the invoice which shows 47.00 + VAT.

When originally quoted, I quickly deduced the pre vat figure to be 40-quid - simple. Although it's only £8.23, how can they now say, "Oh, no, the quote was excluding vat" when TWO people confirmed, on the phone, the amount to be £47.00 INCLUSIVE?

I've just come off the phone to 'em and explained that had they quoted me 55.23, I sill would have paid it, but don't change your mind and add VAT to what was quoted as the total, because that's a blatant con. But all I got was, "I'll check with Kevin and see what he quoted on the order form, but he won't be back 'til next week".

It's not about eight-odd quid... but times aren't that fking bad are they?

If they're VAT registered I know that the VAT should certainly be accounted for separately on an invoice, and I would presume the same is true for any quotations.

I'd just pay the £47 and ignore anything else. They're not going to pursue you for a few quid.

Paid for it over the phone. The lady taking the payment confirmed the amount to be £47.00.

Four days later, I get the invoice which is for 47+

If you have already paid then you have no problems, they agreed a cost and took payment, it is their loss. Oh and if you're VAT registered, claim the £8 back!

Sounds like a misunderstanding to me.

Sales Bod said 'I've quoted him £47' and Accounts Bod automatically assumed it was ex-VAT.

If they're taking payment over the phone they need an audis licence. I'm pretty certain that they will record these calls 'for quality & training purposes' when in fact it's in case of miselling etc and it can be pulled up and played in court.

Ask for a copy of the call. Should sort it out pretty sharpish.

As I said, this is more the principle rather than the amount. I'm not gonna screw over eight quid, but for them to hide behind this so called 'mis-understanding' shows clearly that they're trying to milk customers for ever penny they can get.

The sales guy definitely said 47 and the accounts girl confirmed it as I read out my card details.

This particular pice of equipment (a glass polishing tool) is pretty much a one-off sale. You know when you just know that they know I've flagged something and that they've been caught out... I could tell in the way she started to jitter and stutter. For the sake of £8.23...

Why not just state it at the time? They didn't 'cause the amount was 47. Or just admit they got it wrong???

If it's the former DO and SAY nothing. If the later, just contact card company. 3 days later the money is refunded.
