Hi

I want to get a new DVD player and was hoping for some advice on what I should get. I want a DVD player which has the ability to be able to record DVD disks and also it will be nice to have one with a Hard Drive.
One thing I am not sure about is High Definition, I have a HD ready TV but currently no HD sources. All my current DVD’s are standard so if I get a High Def DVD player and connect it to my HD ready LCD TV will my standard DVD’s look better or will they just be the same?
It would be nice if the picture quality was better without the need to have to replace my entire standard DVD collection with High Def ones.
Final question if I do get a DVD player with a hard drive will it be possible to move stuff saved on my Sky + hard drive to the DVD Hard Drive or to DVD disks?
As for budget well I am looking at around £100 - £150

Get one that upscales your standard DVDs to HD, there's a new Toshiba out that is supposed to be the dogs swingers - can't remember the model at the moment

Don't buy one that upscales! It's a waste of money, if you want High Def, buy a BluRay player and a good solid DVD Recorder. There are loads to choose from.

Your telly's inbuilt scaling chip will probably upscale your standard dvd's better than a 150 quid dvd player.

My only concern with a Blue Ray player is:
a) The cost, i presume these are still very expensive
and
b) Can you play standard DVD's in them? Are they backwardly compatible?

I think they start at around £300, I know the PS3 is rated as one of the best entry level players. And yes, they will play, but not record, DVD's.

Ok £300 is out of my budget, and i went for an Xbox 360 instead of the PS3. Also i really would like to be able to record

Why do you want to record DVDs? If it is just for TV/Sat programmes then maybe a PVR Hard drive recorder will be a better option and get a standalone DVD player.

ETA Sorry, should have read your post. You already have Sky+ and want to record onto DVD, forget my advise!!

Then I would just buy the best DVD player you can afford, and personally I wouldn't put any emphasis on the upscaling as it's a gimick that will IMO make the picture look even worse.

Shame you chose the X-box, the PS3 has an add-on which turns it into a digital tv tuner which uses the PS3 to allow recording of tv programmes, and re-wind of live shows etc...

Mind you the PS3 won't write DVDs, but then I'm not sure why anyone would do that anyways.

No i think the Xbox was a great choice loving online Forza 2, PGR4 and GTA4, easily one of the best purchases i have made in the last few months!
However a shame a lot of my mates choose to go for the PS3 would have been good to have raced them online
