The Lockerbie bomber is battling "advanced stage" cancer, his lawyer said.
Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was diagnosed with prostate cancer after hospital tests last month and the disease has spread to other parts of his body, solicitor Tony Kelly said.
The former Libyan intelligence agent, 56, is serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 27 years for the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 in 1988 which led to the deaths of 270 people.
He was taken from his prison cell in HMP Greenock under tight security to undergo hospital tests at Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock last month.
It is understood he underwent a scan during an outpatient appointment before being returned to jail.
He arrived at the hospital in a convoy of six police motorcyclists and two police cars and spent about two hours there.
Al Megrahi was convicted of the Lockerbie bombing in 2001.
He lost an appeal in 2002, but was given a fresh chance to clear his name in June last year when the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) referred his case back to appeal judges for a second time.
Mr Kelly said that at this stage it would be "unwise" to attempt to predict his client's life expectancy.
But he said the appeal process would go on.

There is a strong posibilty that this man is innocent. Lovely people wishing cancer on anyone.
So, you have better evidence than the courts system? You have information they weren't privy to? If he is actually innocent then I have no issue with that, wish him no ill, but he has been tried and convicted. He has appealed, been overturned...King Herald said:

He has appealed, been overturned...The evidence against al-Megrahi was always a bit shaky to say the least. Essentially it all hinged around the testimony of a Maltese shopkeeper who 'thinks' he remembers Megrahi buying the suitcase from his shop. The suitcase was subsquently used as the carrier of the bomb.
I think, but please correct me if i am wrong, that the case was due to go to a second appeal sometime soon.
I'm also dredging up from my memories that he was originally tried alongside another individual whose case collapsed because of the lack of recognition byt he shopkeeper.
Someone, somewhere is responsible for a terrible act of terrorism and should be brought to Justice. Was al-Megrahi part of that plot? Possibly. Was he the mastermind behind it all? Not a chance.

Guys - please dont take the above as gospel, it all happened a few years ago. I do have more than a passing interest - being a Scot and having worked in the Justice Department at the time of the trial.

I would say you're naive for taking a court decision as absolute truth, especially in this case with all the politics involved.theboymoon said:

I also would like to see all those responsible brought to justice as this was the act of more than one person.

If he's guilty, let's hope that they manage to prolong his life as long as possible. Preferably minus pain relief.
An interesting, if slightly inhumane form of punishment."I hereby sentence you to 15 years of cancer by injection without any form of painkillers for the rape and murder of your 11 year old victim."
