So whos honest then?.
I think its probbably a quality quickly declining, especially amongst the benefit claiming workshy out there.
I was serving a guy last night and he takes the drinks back to his wife and pops outside for a fag leaving his £5 change. Sits back down and has obviously forgotten it, I leave it 5 minutes and take it over then spend the rest of the night thinking im a fool and how many people would have pocketed it in todays Britain.

thats nothing... few years ago i found a wallet, no cards in it but 500 in cash and a peice of paper with a number on it. Called the number and after some more investigation worked out who owed the wallet.
How many people would have gone to that effort ? Makes it more so that i was having serious money troubles at the time !!

Ah, but did you let the owner have his money back? If it was our 'Darling' or Gordy I would be tempted to look on it as a tax rebare for instance. How many people would have gone to that effort ? Makes it more so that i was having serious money troubles at the time !!
A few years ago, when i was going through a "put it down and walk off stage" i left a wallet with its contents, a cash card approx 200 pound somewhere, i think it was macdonalds. The chap who found it handed it into the bank of where my cash card was for and i got a phonecall a few hours later, i hadnt even noticed my wallet was missing.

I found a woman's wallet outside a butchers shop a while back, found her adress inside & was going to pop it round to her, when a worried looking woman came rushing down the street.
I wound the window down & ask "Mrs ######?" she said "yes that's me"
I asked "have you lost anything today"?
When she said she'd mislaid her wallet I handed it back to her & said "be more careful next time"
If it's an individual or a small business, I'm always honest.
If Tesco or Homebase etc c#ck up in my favour then I'll take it thank you.
They make more than enough profit.

It's odd that you were thinking that you were a fool.
If £5 is significant enough to make you doubt yourself then maybe you are not quite as angelic as you are making out to be.
£5 isn't a significant amount, and I own the bar so wouldn't have got the sack if I had kept it. Thing is £5 is too much to be a tip (Well it certainly is in my bar) so he had obviously left it and I was always going to return it. Just got me thinking how many people would have pocketed it. Probably far too many people. If £5 is significant enough to make you doubt yourself then maybe you are not quite as angelic as you are making out to be.
The bottom line is, if your wallet fell out of your pocket with say £100 cash, you'd rather hope someone would hand it back to you. Therefore, that is what I would do if I found someone else's wallet. I found one up a mountain in Spain once (all money had been taken, but cards and photos of loved ones remained), so I brought it home and posted it to the fellow.
Nothing wrong with honesty and decency, it should be encouraged.

I think I'm pretty honest - If I saw someone drop their wallet/20 quid, I'd give it straight back etc.
Someone mentioned 'nicking stuff from work' - I assume something they consider insignificant. I suppose the same goes for the tax man (to some degree). For example, if you called out a tradesman for a low value job and he offered a cash price how many people would do the dishonest thing and save a few quid?

I do everything to be as honest as possible; If I can't be honest for fear of upsetting others, I keep my gob shut and avoid the situation as much as possible.
I think that honest in life will get you very far. It just depends on how you apply it. My old man is a great example of this. He has to be the most honest person I think I will ever meet and he's done pretty damn well for himself with little trouble.
