Not sure if its the right forum, anyway thought I would share this with you.
I was explaining to a pal of mine at work, how I used a syphon to syphon some water out of a difficult place to reach, when he broke into laughter, and proceeded to tell me his exploits the other day with a syphon.
He decided to trade in his wife's car for something better suited, apparantly the back was a tad to high for her to pick up the pram and put it in, anyway she said "I have just filled the car with petrol, and now you want to trade it in", no worries he thought,
I will syphon the petrol out.
First thing he had to do was to purchase a jerry can for the petrol, and he then proceeded to cut a length of garden hose to use as a syphon.
Well, he got the hose into the fuel tank, and after a number of attempts, he managed to suck the petrol up far enough the hose to start the syphon going, but at a trickle he said. He now has had a mouthfull of petrol
anyway, so in desperation he thought of a cunning plan to get the suction going.
So out comes his vacuum cleaner, turned it on, and holding the suction hose to the syphon hose he actually managed to get the petrol flowing. After a few minutes it dropped back to a trickle, so out comes the vacuum again.
This time when he turned it on, an almighty bang, followed with instantainous plume of flame shot out of the vacuum cleaner. Not to be put off with this set back, he waited a while, then thought he would try it again.
This time, same result except the vacuum exploded, fortunately without damage to any other stuff around, or indeed injury to himself. (By now I am in tears the way he is explaining this).
So for the cost of £130 Vacuum, new jerry can, buggered garden hose, and all he managed to syphon was 10 litres of petrol.
Just thought I would share this with you.
