So, N Power are building a new power station at Staythorpe near Newark. It is German owned, and being built by a French contractor. They are employing Spanish workers (two thirds of the workforce) and paying them £12,000 to £14,000 above the going rate so they can pay for accommodation. British workers are not being considered, even though they have the skills, will be cheaper, and want to work.
I can just imagine the French allowing this, or the Germans, or the Spanish.
NOT!

Here's linkie to the story on the BBC News site

Wouldn't be discrimination though (I assume they're either advertising the jobs in Spain or using Spanish sub-contractors whos' workers are Spanish).

the tender went through OJEC so it was open to British contractors, as usual they wanted to cream the profit rather than submit competitive bids and they lost the tenderI can just imagine the French allowing this, or the Germans, or the Spanish.

WRT to paying them £12-14k over the going rate I'd suggest that is media hype - they don't get paid to find digs, the sub-contractor will rent out a house/hotel and will give them £25 as per diams
non story IMO
Heard about this on the radio on the way home, so it seems, the local british workers dont have the requisite skills! Oh really, sounds like that skit from auf weidersehn pet 3, where the lads employ kosovan(i think )workers to tear down the transport bridge in middlesborough. After a dispute, the charge hand says in pidgeon english" you hire british workers, cost 3 times as much, drink tea and scratches balls. we work for less, do twice as much"

Dont know why this has raised its head in this instance. Look at the PFI projects and the number of british workers on them. The vast majority are self employed anyway. Main conractors employ sub contractors who employ sub contractors and all the tax is paid through the CIS scheme. Some British workers but the Polish + other eastern europeans and the Irish make up a large chunk. Its dammned good money if you are willing to work hard.
