Its the time of year where I have to start looking at University courses again, and one said university is the uni of west england, in Bristol. Its apparently pretty good for the Illustration course I want to do.... only problem being, I've never been to Bristol before and at the moment, being a student I can't afford the £80 train journey or £60 petrol to get there and back just yet.

I know the campus I'd be looking at is situated to the west of Southville and Bedminster areas, about 2.5km southwest from the city centre if that helps.

Whats Bristol like, in general? I've heard theres some nice areas, but otherwise my knowledge of the place is next to nothing. Any information, opinions on anything, info on what prices/entertainment/transport etc in the city are like would be great,

thanks.

Louisa

This is old info as I have not lived there for many years but on the whole Brizol (local pronounciation) is not a bad place. Good nightlife and shopping, jobs should not be hard to come by (well before the last month anyway), my Niece went to Uni there and loved it. Bemmy is a bit out of town but only a short bus journey so no big deal.

I was at Bower Ashton, still go back for the degree shows - PM me if you want to know what's what with being a student down there.

Thanks, Bower Ashton is the campus I think I would be on, with that specific course. Tried emailing you off your profile but it won't permit me to do so...

I've looked on google maps, it looks like quite a respectable place!

its a very nice city. I am at Bristol uni in my last year at the moment and my brother is at UWE in his second year.
the new shopping area has meant that the centre is now actually worth visiting for shops (when its not busy). lots of good nightlife and students are well catered for seeing as there are twice as many students in the city compared to many other uni cities.

the major roads into the city are rubbish at the moment, but should get better once all the roadworks is done (we can hope anyway).

oh, and if you like cars (which i presume you do as you are on PH), there is a very good uni motor club! (cheeky plug)

There are fairly frequent Bristol PH pub/curry meets. See the South West forum

Oh well do it here then. Illustration is all in a brand new wing, looks very well equipped. I think they knock out some pretty good illustrators. Living-wise you'd be best off in Southville, which is the nicer more western part of Bedminster. Lots of student houses between Stackpool Road and Raleigh Road. North Street runs right through Southville and has a bit of a buzz about it these days (was dead when I was there a few years ago). Southville is also quite close to the centre of town (so good for nightlife), and you can walk there easily without needing to go anywhere near the more dodgy bits of Bristol.

The only big downsides to being at Bower Aston are that the campus itself is a bit rural (though that can be good thing of course) and that it's rather isolated from the rest of UWE, meaning that the big events, parties and freshers fair are all only reachable by bus.

Bristol is one of those cities , there are places where you definitely don,t want to go and other places that are fine , the student side of the city always looks an interesting place to be and theres plenty of open countryside nearby to enjoy , word of warning though , don,t go near the bushes on the downs , you don,t want to know...they should all be rounded up and shot , do it in your own homes if you have to do that guys !

Being as you are a temporary resident and I lived there for 16 years I think you will find I am right and you are a nerdy student wink

Besides, mine is with a Yate accent which as everyone knows is the posh end of Sadley Broke.

This is very true, the UWE bus service is atrocious and whilst people try and claim that even if your on one of the small lesser campuses you can enjoy the benefits of Frenchay's size and student activities, in reality it is not as easy as relying on the Shuttle bus which is appalling.

Saying that, I've enjoyed my time here, bare in mind its an old poly so its not really an academic institute to be dead proud of, but if thats not what your after, its great.

I like Brizzle, it has a good friendly atmos, and lots of interesting village type areas.

The number of decent record shops has declined markedly though.

Don't jump off the Clifton Suspension bridge there.

Ive had friends at uni there who have had a great time - Ive only been out there a few times myself but i've always had a good night. TBH any large city you go to uni in you will grow to love, because of the people you are there with.

I've lived here for 25 years now and to be honest I've heard hardly anyone use either of those names, except when mucking about. More likely to say Bristow - the Bristolian thing is to stick an 'L" onto the end of words ending in "a" or "o", and knock the "L" off words which end in "L" and stick an "o" in its place. Thus, "Ford Cortinal" or "Vauxho Astral", or "Vauxho Monarol". "My idea" becomes "My ideal", which then muddles me up because I'm not sure whether it is an idea they've just had or an ideal they aspire to.

First time I have ever seen Yate and 'posh' in the same sentence. Well done that man!

maybe its the accent!

but the bristol tourist website seems to think it is brizzle:
http://visitbristol.co.uk/site/guide-book/speak-br...

but then further down the page they have a "dictionary of Bristle" so maybe we are all right.

anyway i guess the main point is that when you first arrive as a student you will encounter proper locals who appear to be speaking a different language but it is infact just Brizzle/Brizol/Bristle.

Yertis has pretty much summed up most of what you need to know. I went to Bower Ashton too; it's a great campus in a nice setting. Downside of the site was that it never seemed to have enough parking.

Indeed!, that deserves a ROFL! but not quite a PMSL.

Perhaps you live in Yaaaaatey? This is, of course, a far superior area, when compared to Yate.

As for it being anywhere near Bradley Stoke......that does deserve a PMSL!

Went to UWE at Frenchay (...I remember when all those tower blocks used to be car parks.....them was the days.) - never had anything to do with Bower and I doubt anyone at Bower had anything to do with Frenchay - I expect its nice enough tho...

Do you drive? or intend to bring a car? you may want to invest in a good cycle and a platinum membership to the self preservation society as the campus is a little way out from everything, as has been said. UWE are also anti-car. In a big way. Unless you work there.
