Very numpty question I must admit but my mate is in America and I need to text her.

Do I just use her normal number and need not put any international code in front? I have only sent a text abroad before to a phone resident in that country so I am unsure.

As I said total numpty question.

As BR says do you know what sort of phone she has as it will need to be Quad band iirc.

Not sure of this, but as she's in the US, she'll be charged for receiving an SMS from you .... the stateside system sounds effing irritating.

I have no idea, in fact I have not even got a clue what phone she has (used to be a Nokia ages ago...) let alone what network she is on.

Guess it will not be as easy as I had hoped, nothing is!

Tri-band phone only required and the text receiving charges are quite heavy.....

If her phone is connected to the network over there (ie she has roaming activated on her account) then all you do is text her as normal.

When I was in France the other week, it was cheaper to send a MMS than it was a text message which seemed strange. I think it costs you to receive texts when abroad as well, the same as it does calls. So don't text her too much!

hehe This could be my opportunity to get back at her for always giving my kids toys that need batteries and the flaming hobby horse she bought that plays annoying tunes.
