Not the London club, but the old school fete favourite. 50p a ticket and you could win anything from a puzzle game to a hen-shaped teapot to a bottle of cheap whisky.
What is the best and worst prize you've won on a raffle or tombola? And who does win the good prizes as they always seem to be still on the table?
I ALWAYS won something at the school disco raffle; it was quite uncanny. Since then I never win so the best I can come up with is a box of Maltesers, back when a box of Maltesers was actually filled to the brim and not a desultory 30 melted balls knocking around spaciously when you shook it. To an 8 year old it was chocolate manna.
The worst prize was down to my own numptiness. I was at an event at junior school and a raffle took place. I knew I'd win something, so I was scouting out the prizes beforehand. On the table was one of those beer making kits - yeast, little taps and stuff (I forget what was in it exactly). Great, I thought, I'll have some of that! Dad'll be chuffed and I don't fancy the cheap Flamenco dancer doll that some thick-calved WI Mabel had obviously brought back from Spain last year, along with a worrying rash after drinking Manuel's water.
Just as my number is called out (see, I knew I'd win) my mother tells me "If you're thinking of getting the beer kit, we don't need it." So off I go, now confused, up to the table: one of those school trestles that groaned with the usual tragedy of cheap items gathered from local jumble sales.
And, in front of the whole school, I say in a loud voice "I'll have the beer kit please!", whilst turning and shooting my mum a winning grin (and an inward thumbs up to myself). Tripping back to her, I tried to ignore the haunted look on her face and what must have been a few mumbled imprecations to those nearby. I still feel embarrassed about it, and we still have the beer kit in a drawer - unused.

A school local to us had one of those "get a hole in one" competitions with a golf club and a make shift green 150yds or so away.
The prize; a lovely car (I forget what)!!!
When a guy actually got the hole in one it turned out it was the headmaster's car and they never actually had a prize. Luckily the guy was very very charitable, it was his son's school, so he didn't make a fuss - but the headmaster could quite easily have lost his car

A do my Mrs was on a couple of years ago had 2 Lambos on one of the holes as the hole-in-one prize. They both went that weekend! The company had assumed they would be impossible to win so had only hired them for the weekend for show. i dont think they actually went bust, but I think it was close! The prize; a lovely car (I forget what)!!!
