Family traditions
Discussion
What strange customs have passed through the generations in your family?
One small thing I've carried on (in a way) from my father is cottage loaves. He bought a cottage loaf each week and would make his sandwiches from it. The smell of a huge fresh loaf, separated into two and carved into lovely thick doorstops on a wooden bread board is the smell of my childhood.
Every so often I try to rekindle this tradition of a loaf a week but what usually happens is I don't bother to make sandwiches, forget it is in the breadbin and half of it goes hard and most definitely 'off'. I love the taste and smell but I seem completely unable to make the most of it, yet keep doing it because my dad did.
I've bought a cottage loaf today - here's to a hunk or two with cheese this evening! Yay!

Being a tight get seems to run in the family, don't it Wacky?
Also, not so much a tradition but I hope I don't inheret the 'blatently lying out your arse' trait.
Myself and my brothers will forever remember within minutes of arriving somewhere on holiday; whether we'd arrived at a hotel and gone straight to our room, or gone to a cottage:
"QUIET! THERE'S A BABY ASLEEP NEXT DOOR/UPSTAIRS!"
Always the legendary as well, trying to get us out the door for the school run so as not to be late to work... Standing at the bottom of the stairs:
"I'M GOING DOWN THE DRIVE, RIGHT NOW!"
Oh how we laughed.

A huge amount of emphasis put on the importance of a phone call to the parents at least once a week, even though:
a) I have nothing new to tell them
b) All I get in return is a run-down of Mum's "illness of the week"
Complete disownment and a subsequent s
tty letter if birthday cards are:
a) Late
b) "Inappropriate"
c) Lacking in enclosed cash
d) Complete with enclosed cash (as I shouldn't send cash through the post)
e) Not accompanied by a phone call on the day
f) Forgotten completely

One small thing I've carried on (in a way) from my father is cottaging. He used to go cottaging each week and would come home smelling of it. The smell of a fresh cottager, recently split in two over a doorstep is the smell of my childhood.
Every so often I try to rekindle this tradition of a cottage a week but what usually happens is I don't bother to get a semi first, so it goes half hard and then goes 'off'. I love the taste and smell but I seem completely unable to swallow most of it, yet keep doing it because my dad did.
I've been cottaging today - met a hunk who tasted slightly of cheese this evening! Yay!

The question I absolutely hate, the most stupidest, most pointless question ever asked and the question I get asked every frikkin' time is "Are you looking after yourself?"
"No Mum, I've been injecting myself with crack from used syringes from the back of the AIDS clinic, eating dog s
t, drinking Jeys Fluid and jumping off motorway bridges into the path of on-coming artics."

You don't mind starting a nostalgia based thread or two, do you V8?
Ah, well I've been bored with the threads on PH lately. Nothing has grabbed me so I've had a little cry in the corner and come up with a few merit-less belly button fluff ideas. This phase will pass and I'll go back to popping up every so often with some ill-advised humour about my OH that I'll quickly try to delete.
