There seems to be a few threads centred around folks' intolerance of others' personal habits, so I'll add another.

I inject Insulin, done so for eight years or so.

Never had a problem with others, who are used to it. However my mates dad, in his late 70s, so think he has a God given right to say what he likes when he likes, etc..., he takes it on himself one day in the pub, just as I am shoving 8mm of sterelised steel into my abdomen, to say, "Can't you do that in the toilet?"

Before I could stop myself, I retorted, "I don't eat my lunch in the lavvy, so I don't inject there either".

It all went quiet, everyone trying to think of something innocuous to start the conversation. I got on with my lunch before the Insulin started to bite.

Are you certain he isn't just a bit simple and thinks you're a junkie?
If not, what a tool!

Alot of people are squeamish when around needles, for me that is about as tolerable as women who breast feed thier kids in front of people, then asks "wot you stareing at"

Yeah me too. I don't want to appear rude by I would have said something too.

It might be fine for the OP to shoot up his insulin as he's used to doing it, but it makes me feel proper ill having had a history of dealing with people with a habit frown

Just my opinion.

YOU might think they don't have a problem with it just because they haven't said anything.

I'd probably vomit in your lap if you did it in front of me because I have a "thing" about needles.

Weirdly, so do i, but the hospital ones, the piddly ones i use dont hold any fears, but once i go for blood tests, cold sweats, start tensing up, want to run away!

Ok I really think he has a point. I mean, I know it's essential to you and all that, but............ That's disgusting.

I know it may be second nature to you but I think if somebody done that in front of me I'd be sick. Do you honestly not think it's something that should be kept private?

Another trypanophobic here. Bizarre, I can watch surgery with no problems, but injections make me nauseous. But I wouldn't have a problem with a diabetic self-injecting, I'd just look away while he did it.

I think some things should be kept private, for self dignity. Just my opinion, I am entitled to it just as you are entitled to inject where you may think fit. Not everyone is happy to see a personal display. As I said this is just my opinion. I wish you good health.smile

Odd. I knew a few people who take insulin and their injectors are the pen type affairs. You'd have to be looking pretty hard to see a needle.

Ime' sorry, I must agree, but I would also be chunkin' up if you calmly injected yourself where I could accidently see you.
It would really put me out on one, needles are a big no no.

I too have a 'thing' about needles... but I think your quick witted retort about not eating in the loo is a VERY good point.

In all honesty, I'd be cool with you doing it at the table after thinking about the point you made. I'd probably just have to look in the other direction.

My fiancee (hehe still getting used to that word!) has been diabetic for about 30 years and injects a few times a day with one of those pen things.

To be quite honest you'd be going some to actually see what he's doing, and it's over so quickly blink and you miss it - even if you do, you can't see the needle it's so short.

Public toilets are often unpleasant places, not sure I'd want to inject in there and it honestly is over sooo quickly and can be done very subtly.

Very unlike flopping a very private part of your anatomy out out and attaching a child to it for a few minutes...

This topic sounds almost identical to the breast-feeding topic.

Is this a squeamishness thing?
I wear contact lenses and the ability to rub my own eyeballs or the act of swapping lenses, can, I've noticed, nauseate some people so I tend to be discrete about it, but I can't see why it should do so?

Okay, for those of us who are afflicted with the need to inject various types of medication, its entirely normal, but for those of you who are "normal", i can see how this sort of thing would gross you out. i can only speak for myself, buti tend to inject in the privacy of my own home, but for diabetics like the OP, its not always possible, and if it freaks you out, dont look, but again i realise sometimes its not possible to avoid seeing it.
