I've been out and about today looking in Cotswold Outdoors and anywhere I could find to try and get a new jacket.

I believe I want a "technical garment" rather than a fashion jacket, I want something very lightweight that can be worn almost like a cardigan rather than a jacket, but that keeps the wind out which my current fleece doesn't do a very good job of.

Not into brand snobbery, do want something made to last hence thinking less well known "technical garment" makers might be a better choice.

Search seems down, been looking at Marmot, Mountain Equipment etc.

I bought a great Rab VR Trail jacket from Cotswold Rock Bottom - it's a climbers jacket, fleece lined, windproof, water-resistant. One of the best bits of kit I've got.

Have you tried your local golf shop?
I'm sure they will have a selection

Can't say I have, though I would add I like the look of the more technical stuff vs. fashion stuff, even though it'll never see the side of a hill let alone a mountain.

Ditto - very best bit of kit I have, very flexible, had it for years & still good.

I've had several items of Mountain Equipment clothing over the years, Goretex outer layers and insulating jackets, gaiters, hats, gloves etc. and they have all performed fantastically, so it's definitely a brand I can recommend. Patagonia is another brand I've head lots of good things about too.

I got a marmot superhero jacket.
Pricey but the best item of clothing I have ever bought.

It is made of some windstopper shell material.

At the risk of sounding like a chav...... I bought a lightweight North Face jacket a couple of weeks ago, for what sounds like exactly the same reasons as you; so far it's been great, very light but good at keeping out wind rain etc.

Cheers all, just got back from Go Outdoors with a Rab VR Soft Shell jacket, seems a decent bit of kit and I still have my North Face fleece for the more chavvy moments biggrin

I've got one of these: http://www.fieldandtrek.com/Products/FT/PID-Rove+T...
I really dont know why it's so cheap but it is brilliant - just did a month in Mongolia with it where it was perfect.

I bought a Windstopper fleece 4 years ago which is really good. It stopped my torso dropping off despite sub-zero winds whipping me on Ben Nevis. It is North Face though, which some bright spark has recently decided means i'm a chav confused .

I also had one of these:

until I left it at Schipol airport (idiot). Windproof fleece, water resistant (not waterproof), with pit vents, no hood though. Well worth the cash.
